Recently there was a case here in Oregon that a child had come down with lead poising and they were talking about it on the news. My wife and I both said at the same time "Don't lick the paint stupid!"
But, then the news said they lived in a 2001 farmhouse. I asked my wife, then how did the kid get lead poising? They haven't used lead based paint since 1977, and so unless he was going to the neighbors and licking their walls there had to be another explanation.
The story said they were thinking just like me, what could it be? Well, it turns out that they wanted to make their nice 2001 farmhouse more authentic and found a clawfoot tub made at the turn of the century. This tub, it turns out was made of lead, and if sealed, would have been completely safe. But, they were giving this child baths in a tub that had a chip in it and the tub was filling with water that now had toxic levels of lead in it.
Every time this family was giving their child a bath, they were slowing killing him and didn't even know it. So if you have an old clawfoot tub and you see a chip, get it fixed ASAP, or like this family you could be putting yourself or your children at risk of lead poisoning.

Very Interesting.......this is something I have never thought about.......
Todd,
That's one I never thought of. I guess people should be cautious about using reclaimed materials. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this. I have an old clawfoot tub and never would have thought of this. Thank you, thank you!
Thanks for the info sent it to my sister who has an old tub like this one.
Hadn't even thought about that. No old tubs here... but hadn't even thought about it. I will now be thinking about it.
Hi Todd,
WOW!!! What a story. It's similar to Granite countertops releasing toxic Radon gas. The things you learn on ActiveRain....
;>)
Todd - Yikes! I never would have thought of that, but I also never would have considered having an authentic clawfoot tub. I hope the boy is going to be okay!
Very interesting tidbit of info Todd! Those clawfoot tubs are becoming popular and I never would have thought of this angle!
Good grief -- who would have thought -- a claw-foot tub! Never know what is lurking in the oddest places.
Wow, thanks for the info. What a horrible feeling the parents must have.
Good info, but I still like your original thoughts, don't lick the paint stupid! Wait until we have a carpet disclosure for chemicals used in the manufacturing process. Or a pressure treated wood disclosure.
Terry - I don't think most people would have. When I think of lead poisoning, I think of paint and Chinese toys.
Brian - I know there was no warning on the tub when they bought, there are shops all over town that sell this old stuff.
TODD - This is pretty scary. I wouldn't take the chance with this kind of tub with this knowledge.
Hello Todd, I didn't hear this story so I appreciate you sharing with us. Who woulda thought? You try to cover all the bases and then.....that stinks! I feel bad for this family.
Hey Todd: We won't have any homes to clean if we don't make the right choice . . .
Sarah Palen, GOP pick is the mother of 5. One of which is 17 and pregnant. Palen is McCains best choice to be VP? WOW - visit our blog and comment. THX
Thanks for the story. I missed it and I haven't heard this one before. Something to be mindful of in the future.
Ardell - I would watch for chips! If you see one get it repaired immediately.
Donald - You are going to look like the great older brother if there happens to be a chip in her tub.
Lane - I think your clients will be happy you did, most certainly don't think of something like that when they think of lead poisoning.
Ann-Marie - I didn't know about that and now there is something else to think about.
Jason - I think they are getting harder and hard to find, but if you look around some of those original claw foot tubs can hold 3 large adults sitting down. (THEY ARE HUGE)
Renee - I think most of the ones we see are new, but made to look old, finding an actual one is harder than you think.
Bob or Carolin - It just goes to show we need to watch out every where for dangers for our families.
Tim - I'm sure they feel real bad, but how were they supposed to know?
Home Realty Group - Oh, it will be coming I guarantee it. As lawyers get their hands on our contracts because of a lawsuit, we will have another 4 or 5 addendums. I'm glad you like the title though.
Adam - The problem is, is there anything safe anymore? Even if you buy a toy made in China now, there is that scare.
Lori - So did I, I can't imagine the feeling of trying to figure out why my kid is sick and running in to dead ends where ever I go. Then to find out it was my love of a certain kind of tub that was killing him.
Leslie - I think we are here to help protect our clients from harm, but we can't know everything, but at least I now know this.
Once again, I learn something new everyday. Thanks for the heads up.
Jen - Glad I could help and hopefully it helps one of your clients.
I am in the market for a clawfoot tub, and I never would have thought about the lead poisoning factor, had I not read this blog! Thanks!
Scott - Just make sure it is properly sealed and if you ever chip the paint, do use it until it is repaired.
