Remember Sam the Butcher?
He passed away this week. He was Alice's boyfriend, or love interest in the Brady Bunch way way back in the 70's. He was always a friendly guy, and seemed to bring Happiness to Alice, who was the house keeper for all those Bradys'.
His name was Allen Melvin, and he actually appeared in a number of TV Shows so many years ago. He was always the sidekick to another main character in the show.
Allen also appeared in the All in the Family show, and was Archie Bunker's Friend Barney Hefner. He played Cpl. Henshaw, who was Sgt. Bilco's right hand
man on the Phil Silvers Show.
But his place in pop culture was his role as Sam Franklin, the local butcher and bowler, who was the love interest for Alice Nelson, the housekeeper on the Brady Bunch. He played this role from 1970 to 1973
Allen also appeared on the Andy Griffity Show, Gomer Pyle USMC, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. He was also the voice of Hanna Barbara's cartoon character, Magilla Gorilla.
Allen Melvin passed away this past Thursday from cancer. He was 84
Do you remember Sam the Butcher?

Gosh... It has been a long time but, yes I remember him! That was such a cute story line. You knew that him and Alice where (more than friends). Thanks for taking us back.
Sam and Barney were the same guy! I feel cheated.

I was not aware that on the Brady Bunch, they talked about Alice and Sam in that manner. THanks for your thoughts though

Hey Daniel. I guess these things happen! I wonder if Alice knew that her butcher was also Magilla Gorilla!

Hi Donald,
I read about that. I also read this morning that Suzanne Pleshette (from The Bob Newhart Show) also died this morning.
Thanks for sharing this as some of those wonderful character actors deaths don't hit the mainstream news when Brittney is taking over the airtime. I loved the Brady Bunch and Sam was a great part of the show. I just saw that Suzanne Pleshette died today too....Bob Newhart's wife in the same sitcom era. Icons in their own right.
Thanks Donald, Leslie and Teri for the updates in 'TV' news. I really liked Ms. Pleshette.
I remember Sam from the Brady Bunch! I hated to here that as well as Suzanne Pleshette passing as well.
Oh Sam, rest in peace. You brought back some good memories...
Wow, I remember watching his as a kid, 84, how time flies. Seems like I was just 14 or so.
Donald, WOW. Now that you mentioned it I do remember him in all those roles. He will be missed but he won't be forgotten thanks to cable and nick and night.

I remember Sam...especially when the kids locked themselves in his meat freezer. He wasn't mad, just concerned. I hope he is in a better place.
