Gettysburg Historic Structures Churches in Gettysburg Borough
Being a Realtor here in historic Gettysburg Borough Pa, it is hard not to look in any direction and NOT see a historic structure. Be it a historic home, church, or factory building it is there right in front of you. Many continuing to serve a useful purpose in the community. Being one who loves the historical structures, the Gettysburg Adams County Pa area offers a wide variety to choose from for study. Many of the Churches here in Gettysburg Borough were here during the Battle of Gettysburg, and many served as hospitals for the wounded. Something to think about that many do not realize is that long after both armies had left the battlefield and area, thousands of wounded from both sides remained behind. Most of those left behind were too seriously injured to be moved and they were simply left behind for the Gettysburg community to deal with. That meant that many of these church hospitals remained hospitals for some time.
Some 200-250 wounded soldiers from both sides were taken to St.Francis Xavier Church here in Gettysburg Borough. Care was administered by The Sisters of Charity from Emmistburg, Marland. They say that the blood was so deep it seeped down through the wooden floor of the church, into the basement. The massive front doors of the church were laid across the pews and used as operating tables. One sister recounted "They lay on the pew seats, under the pews, in every aisle, and there was scarcely room to pass among them in the sanctuary and in the gallery." In the lobby of the St. Francis Xavier you can still see where the blood has stained the floor.
This particular church is two blocks from my office, I pass it often on my way to the center of town. I feel that with living in Gettysburg Pa comes a responsibility to remember and recognize the severe sacrifices that those before me made to keep this country together. On a daily basis I am humbled by that thought. Having the opportunity to live and work in historic Gettysburg Pa is a blessing, but one that comes with a healthy respect for what occurred here for three days in summer of 1863.
