Building Character - Lancaster Renovation Warehouse Opens

On October 5th Lancaster City finally got what was coming to it...it's very own renovation and salvage warehouse!

Tony Nies & Marty Hulse opened Building Character on that day to a first-friday crowd and have been rolling ever since. I stopped by this week with Carole Wilson from Lancaster County Planning Commission to meet these entrepreneurs and tour their one-of-a-kind shop at 342 North Queen Street (Warehouse B).

The store already has a large selection of home fixtures and trimwork in inventory. Owner Marty Hulse commented "I've always been a lover of 'old things' and much of these items come from my collection". Marty has been collecting for many years and it shows in the choices available on the warehouse floor.

Not only does Building Character have lots of home renovation fixtures such as hot-water radiators, doors, window panes, hardware and much more, but it also has art pieces hung tastefully throughout the showroom. Painting and photography are on display at the moment, and Tony & Marty intend to rotate artists through as time goes on.

I show many homes in Lancaster City that are historic in nature but stripped of much of their original character by the passing of time and the ravages of unthinking occupants. Building Character offers the unique local opportunity to restore and renovate an historic Lancaster City home to it's former glory. Tony & Marty expect to expand into salvaging homes for their historic parts, so if you know of a home that will need to b salvaged give them a call to alert them.

Building Character is open 10-6 Tuesday-Saturday and 12-5 Sunday. For more information visit http://www.buildingcharacter.biz/ or give them a call at 717-394-7201. Some parking is available off the alley between Prince & Queen Streets, or you can park along the 300 block of N. Queen and walk through the archway at #342. Stop by and say hi to Tony & Marty and welcome Building Character to Lancaster!

Hey Jeff, what a neat place!  I could spend hours in places like that.  It looks like there are so many unique items in there.

Jeff, what a great name!  I'll have to check it out.  It's within walking distance of my office...

Jeff, Is there that much of an inventory in your area? I know there are older homes, but are they being torn down or renovated with "new fangled" fixtures. (some people just don't know what they've got!)

Jeff- Oh My! What great photos you have taken! I love these types of buildings and stores. Katerina

Jeff,

Excellent photos and a nice blog entry. I didn't know of this place, but will be checking it out very soon.

All - this place really is neat!  Say hi to the owners while you're there...
