The Best Kept Secret in Real Estate

Diary of a Whimpy REALTOR

google peter b lavelle philadelphia real estateAvid reader I am. I read an average of 2 books a week and just did not get it. Being physically tired from the running around and driving over the past several days taking my family out on day trips, due to my wife being off for vacation; I turned on the television.

So relaxing to lay on the couch and flip through the channels. There it was. I have been trying to watch the movie "Amistad" for several years now and I was only able to catch bits and pieces. The wife went out to do some shopping and the boys were in the family room playing. I felt like a kid in a candy store.

It was one of the scenes when John Q. Adams makes this remark that I finally got it, "Well when I was an attorney, a long time ago, young man, I err... I realized after much trial and error, that in the courtroom, whoever tells the best story wins. In unlawyer-like fashion, I give you that scrap of wisdom free of charge" I've read this in many books but never read between the lines. This statement about "Telling the best story" was always there, maybe not in these exact words, but it was always there.

This is one of the best kept secrets in real estate, or any profession for that matter. We walk in to a home-owner's house, have a walk-through, and then dazzle them with marketing, stats, comps, and whatever else to try and win the listing. We know what the home-owners are, do we ever try to learn about "who" the home-owners are? And with that being stated, try to make a connection with them from the other clients that may have a similar story as theirs.

So now you know what the best kept secret is, those with the best stories win.
