In any business transaction, whether it be a real estate transaction, a contractor you're dealing with or even an automobile purchase, whatever you agree to, get it in writing. Even if you're dealing with a person as sweet and trusting as a Mother Theresa, just remember even they can forget what they promised you if they forgot to take their Selenium supplement.
I know first hand from real estate - How can you close a deal today and expect to remember every little detail 2 months from now at Settlement? No way. Can't happen. Nada.
So to keep eveyone on the same page, document. Dealing with a contractor? Get a written estimate that includes everything they are promising to do for you. Don't take no for an answer. Any reputable business person will be happy to do that for you. It also protects them. While you're at it, ask to see proof they are insured. I know a person who hired a company to refinish his hardwood floors. On the contractor's truck was written "Fully Insured". What my friend didn't know was the contractor dropped his insurance to save money. Guess what? My friend's gas pilot light was on in his fireplace. And then... is the suspense getting to you yet... the combustible finishing fluids combusted. FIRE!!! My friend paid for the damage.
There are a million other stories that could be told here. Heavens to Mergatroy! Get a written estimate and proof of insurance. You don't want to end up in Court. Judge Judy will certainly chastise you for not protecting yourself.
