The Eagle Has Landed: Wild Card Wednesday

Wild Card WednesdayWelcome to the Wild Card Wednesday #2!

WIN a $5 GIFT CARD! Details below.

On Christmas morning, I saw a very large something swoop past the window - a gorgeous bald eagle! It landed on a tree and looked right at me as I quickly snapped the picture (how often does that happen - the camera was right there at the right time and the subject cooperated!) Cool huh?

Pike Count PA Bald Eagle

The bald eagle has become more of a common site here in Pike County; conservation efforts have been successful in bringing our nation's symbol out of danger of extinction. However, since I'm a few miles from Lake Wallenpaupack, and several miles from the Lackawaxen River, I never expected to see one in my yard in Paupack!

Bald eagles have been seen near Lake Wallenpaupack (the osprey is a more common sight there, though) but the majority of the sightings have been along the Lackawaxen River in Kimbles, Rowland, & Lackawaxen (on the Towpath Road.)

Later that January, my kids and I counted over a dozen eagles roosted in trees by the Lackawaxen on The Towpath. I had never seen an eagle in the wild before this picture was taken. Eagle watching is a popular local pass time and hobby - here are some conservation programs that may be of interest:

Eagle watching is but one perk of owning a riverfront property! Click to see the current riverfront homes for sale in Pike and Wayne County, along the Delaware, Wallenpaupack, and Lackawaxen Rivers. Each river & river front home has a unique character and its own beauty. Contact me for more information.

Now, about that $5 gift card. Send a picture for Wild Card Wednesday.

Only a couple of rules: the picture must be your own, or you must have explicit permission from the photographer to submit it - nothing from email forwards or National Geographic websites! Also, it should have something to do with Northeast PA - either the flora and fauna, weather picture, or a picture of life in general - i.e., tubing or kayaking down the Delaware, water skiing, etc.

No hunting trophies, please - those will be a future feature.

The deadline for the first drawing is April 26, 2008!

What a beautiful eagle, and I did read the post after looking at the eagle.

Great idea, Karen.  Are you getting submissions?

Karen, I just love that.  I am so excited that in my neighborhood we have a pair of Hawks.  I have taken photos of them, but I need a better lens for a close up.  The bald eagle is so majestic.

That is a great picture of that eagle. It's great that we can see bald eagles in Pennsylvania again. I usually spot them each year when we kayak through the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

Karen - A thing of beauty indeed.  I've never seen one up close, but I'm sure that day will come.

Thank you, J Manno - it was a majestic sight to be sure!  I only wish I hadn't had my camera set to super low resolution - this would have made a nice enlargement.  Oh well...

Lisa - thanks!  Nope, no submissions, which will be okay for the first month, cause I'll make a joke of it as I award my prize to ME.  ha ha!

Audrey - I love to hear a hawk's cry!  I've seen a few hawks but usually, my big bird sightings  are limited to overgrown crows and the occasional buzzard!  We have a very loud owl but I've never seen him...only heard him.  the first time he hooted, he scared the dog AND the kids.  LOL

Michael - good to see you.  I saw the PA Grand Canyon once when visiting friends who live in Towanda.  We have to get over there again.

Jason - there's an Eagle Fest every January, I think - one of the websites I linked to probably has the details (how's that for helpful).  You should take a day and come up - you're only about an hour and a half to two hours from where the Eagle Fest is, I think.

Karen - Eagles are so beautiful, it is a privilege  getting the Chance to see one up close.

Karen- This is by far, absolutely- a gorgeous photo that you took. I love eagles and I would treasure that moment forever. How blessed you are to be able to have an eagle in the wild that close to you! Look at those amazing eyes, another of God's amazing creatures.

Nice photo and great catch.  I am always running to my office to grab my camera but by then the bird has flown the coop.

Nice photo! I do enjoy bird photography. I  caught a few eagles on camera last year in Alaska.

WOW!  That must have been an awesome sight!!   Great Picture.
