For anyone who has had to use a Hospice Service you know how wonderful (or not so wonderful) they can be. This past week I spent many long hours in a Hospice Center that I have to let people know about. For those who don't know what Hospice is, it is a specialized care for the terminally ill in their final hours or days.
My father in law was diagnosed with liver cancer last year and actually over the past year did very well considering what a terrible disease that is. Last week we went to visit my inlaws because it was my mother in law's birthday and had a nice visit although we could see my father in law Michael was starting to deteriorate. He was weak, didn't want to eat and wasn't talking much. I suggested to my mother in law that maybe it was time for a nurse. The following day she said the Dr. had told her that he was not eligible for a nurse or nursing care because he was still mobile, feeding himself etc...I was surprised but hey I am not the Dr. Within 24 hours I received a call that he was in the hospital and was being transferred to a hospice center because they had discovered he now had brain metastasis. (The cancer had now traveled to the brain) I called the necessary family members and headed out on the 1 1/2 hour drive myself. He was taken to VNA Hospice of Monroe County in Pennsylvania. I cannot say enough about this place. It was beautiful, peaceful and the staff phenomenal. They treated Michael like a King.

So to my father in law Michael we all love you so and will miss you always.

The health care professionals and caregivers at theses facilities are truly special. The live and work with death all day long, and I'm sure it does get to them at times, but when they are with patients, their spirits are as if the patient was going to be released the next day. Having had a brother-in-law spend his last 2 months in a Hospice with brain cancer, I truly understand your feelings. Thank you for sharing.
Debra, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family during this difficult time. Yes, the caring nurses will make it easier on you all and your father-in-law deserves to be treated like a king during his last moments here on earth.

Debra - I am very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know first hand how important the services of hospice are not only to the person that is suffering, but for the family members that are facing the imminent loss of a loved one. To me, the people that work for hospice, are God's angels on earth.
Judy-Thank you for stopping.
