I can't remember when I was more e
xcited about an election. It wasn't long ago, sadly, that it was impossible for little girls, African Americans or minorities to imagine that they could grow up and be president.
Now, in one fell swoop, we have an extremely intelligent and articulate woman and a handsome, intelligent and charismatic African American man running for the highest office in our country. I am so excited that my 18 year old son also got to vote for the first time today. He's an Obama man, as most young Democrats seem to be. I am so proud of him for getting out there and doing his civic duty. Ours is a house divided. I am a lifelong Democrat, my husband a dyed in the wool Republican. You can imagine that discussions get a little heated around here. My children were divided until this year. My little guy, who turns 12 in July had always claimed to be a Republican but has been very excited by the possibiltiy of Obama winning the election.

I have been torn between these two wonderful choices but I made my decision last night, went out today and did it. I won't say who I voted for, but it was a tough choice. Do I get to make history and help elect the first African American president, or do I get to make history and elect the first Woman president? Only in this great country can we get to make choices like this. Everybody has a right to their own opinion, that's why we are so lucky to be Americans!
God Bless America.

Susan - great point, though I would hardly call Hilary a little girl:-) how's it going over there, I hear there's blood in the streets.
It's hard for me to vote for a democrat, but you make a great point.
Well, we are also a divided household .....makes it tough!
Unfortunately you won't get to vote for the first African or the first woman president because neither of them are electable, ww will get at least 4 more years of Republicans
blue state red state United states?
I think it is becoming more clear that it won't be this woman or this "african" man. When one of them can run without their gender or race being mentioned, then they will be an electable candidate.
Dear Alan and Heath, I hesitated to write this blog because I was afraid that I would hear a lot of negative comments. I beg to differ with Alan, I think both candidates are very electable. As for Heath's comment the only reason the gender or race is being mentioned is because it is history in the making.
Peter, thanks for keeping your comments upbeat and on the funny side. Ernie and Barb, fight nice!
Susan, Never feel intimidated to write about your feelings and convictions. I don't... I am also a democrat at heart (even if the rest of my immediate family: sister, brother in law and parents) are republicans and I do also feel that we are making history with whomever we'll elect for the party...
As for the general elections I think that this country is "feed up" and "broth to it's knee" after the last 8 years of republican administration... Isn't that obvious for ANYBODY to see???
Arina, Thanks for the reply to my post. I can't wait to see the end of this administration and I am looking forward to a new, fresh start. You, as always, are positive and upbeat and if I ever get to Las Vegas, I am going to have lunch with you!
And I am so excited because they are all coming to Denver for this Historic Event
Susan , Absolutely... Would be a great pleasure for me to meet a nice, sweet person like you... Just let me know in advance.
Susan, I'm glad the Pennsylvania primary finally took place. It was a long time from the last one and a lot of mud slinging in the campaigns. Hopefully this will all be good for the people of the U.S. eventually as we get into the fall campaign.
Susan....great post and definately politically charged. We will make history with either Democratic candidate. The race has been a bit nasty at times with a bit of mud in the air but that is politics? I am interested in watching the upcoming months. Thanks for taking the brave step on this post.
I have a group called "wrong right turn" if you would like to post this blog there....It's a small group started a couple of months ago.
Gary, Thanks for your note. I agree, the negativety is ugly and I really can't wait for the entire thing to be over. But it will be so nice to have a change.
Andrew, It is a tight race and I agree, it would be nice to have the candidates earn the right to be in the White House. I am hoping that a new administration will bring much needed hope and change.
Pam, I didn't intend my post to be politically charged. I was hoping to express my feelings of hopefulness about this country and how far we have come in equality, I know we still have a long way to go but this is a positive place to be.
It's been a long 6 weeks to the PA primary, and now they are off running to the next hot spot.
Susan - I too am encouraged by our choices. I really didn't see this happening. Go women! Go African Americans! We can do it!
Susan- I still like you. The wonderful thing about our country is that we have the freedom to vote. Most countries do not. I am a very conservative Christian Pro Israel Republican. We can agree to disagree and honor each other's right to their own opinion. Nevertheless, after watching my mother and her family flee from Latvia to get away from Stalin, Marxism and Lennon, I will do all in my power to make sure we do not have the socialism ideals of either Hillary or Obama to destroy free enterprise, take away more parental rights and take any more of my hard earned money for more social programs. Standing in bread lines and living in government housing in the USSR was a failed system that will not work.
The biggest problem in this country is that too many Americans do not go to other parts of the world to see how socialism is not working, how government health care is not working, and how beaten down their people are from being taxed 50% or more. Ireland has turned the tables on socialism in Europe and is now a thriving example of what low taxes and low tariffs can accomplish for the economic benefit of it's people. We taught them to be this way, they want to be like us and now we are saying that is not the way?
Susan,
I'm not much for these election things even though I have to vote for someone. I personally hate watching when they stab each other in the back to get votes...it's a job...I guess someone has to do it.
Susan,
Thanks for commenting on my post, as well. I have to admit that I am a republican, and my son is actually the first democrat in the family. Unfortunately, I'm not fond of my republican choices ~ so I am really torn! He is receiving flack from many family members, but the important thing to keep in mind is that we have the right to choose who we'd like to vote for ~ and isn't that a wonderful thing!
Susan-Very nice post. We certainly live in exciting times. It is difficult to predict who will win the primary or the general election, but we will definitely see history made whomever is nominated. I sincerely hope that the Democratic nominee makes it to the White House!
I don't understand all the sour grapes from the right. I respect John McCain and think he is a decent man. I just disagree with his positions on many issues. I can't understand why some on the other side can't show a little respect for the Democratic candidates.
Dear Rich, I don't understand all the sour grapes either. I'm with you. John McCain is a very decent man. I live with someone on the dark side and all actually rants when he talks about Hillary. I'll admit I haven't exactly been complimentary about G W in the last 8 years, but I don't understand why people get so vindictive about this topic. And I honestly can't figure out where the socialism comments come in. I don't consider myself or either of the democratic candidates to be socialists.
Susan people go nuts over this, don't take it personally. I've been called many many things on AR and socialist would actually be quite nice in comparison!
Andrew, my favorite line during this entire and totally too long campaign was this: What didn't you like about the 90's? The Peace, or the Properity?
I'm not sure if Bill Clinton said it or Ed Rendell, but not only was it funny, when you think about it, it was true. I don't pretend to be smart enough to debate some of the fine minds we have here on Active Rain, but really, what didn't they like about Bill's 8 years in the White House? His sad and lowly morals not withstanding, I thought he did a wonderful job as President.
Andew... just for you. Scat is pictured on the left (of course) if the Democrats win. On the right (sadly) if the Republics win again! Have a great day!
Well Andrew, you've done it! I'm speechless.
Well, maybe not completely. (My husband would love it if I became totally speechless - especially during a big election year)!
I agree with you. We do want a leader we can be proud of. It would be nice to have it all. Unfortunately, human beings will always disappoint. Bill just happened to do it in a BIG WAY AND ON TV!! I can't refute anything you've said... you are one of the fine minds I wouldn't care to debate! You are "right on" in all of your comments.
We haven't had a Republican Cabinet that was staffed with decent, honest people in many decades. Perhaps none of you are old enough to remember Earl Butz, James Watt and Donald Regan. The current bunch is a sad lot, no better than Nixon's cabinet or Reagan's. Even W's dad did better than he has.
