Private drinking water in Prince Edward Island is not regulated either by the Federal Government in Ottawa, or the Provincial Government in PEI. It is the sole responsibility of each home owner in PEI to make sure their domestic water is of good quality. The PEI water test sample can be checked by a PEI Government lab to determine if there is any harmful bacteria (E.coli) or excessive chemicals (19 parameters are tested) in the sample. The results of the bacteria testing are usually available within two days, but the chemical testing take from one to two weeks. If the tests are not successful, the home owner is encouraged to contact a PEI government representative for advice on any follow-up actions.
In regards to purchasing a house in the PEI Real Estate market, the Vendor is responsible to make sure the water is of good quality to the buyer, a third party is required to do the testing and not the Vendor.
