East Greenwich RI Odeum Theater - On the Rebound.

It is a brighter future for the East Greenwich Odeum Theater for this coming year! The Champlin Foundation of RI has just given a $141,600 grant to the East Greenwich Odeum Theater to renovate. The Odeum is located front and center on Main Street in East Greenwich around the corner from the East Greenwich town hall.

First on the agenda, I am told, is to make all the seat covers less flammable and have them recovered. It has been a long road to re-opening and with fire laws and compliance for the Theater, it was very questionable whether or not the Odeum would re-open and as a non-profit organization. Now both of these items seem likely.

For one, the fire regulations by the fire department have been relaxed a bit and they are working closely with the Odeum staff to have a workable solution. Secondly, the return to non-profit status is in the works again. The East Greenwich Town Council has extended its deadline for the re-opening of the Odeum until 3/30/2012. They have also forgiven some of the property taxes by working out a parking lot share program between the town and the theater.

For all of you who are unfamiliar with the Odeum’s past, it has been a great venue for music groups and theater. Since 2007 it has been closed due to not being able to meet the very strict fire codes that were placed on businesses after the Station Night Club fire. This is all about to change! Welcome back Odeum - it is rebound time!

Many of us have enjoyed musical groups or theater productions with friends at the Odeum and long to have this kind of venue operational and since it is part of our community.
