SOUTH CAROLINA PASSES PERHAPS THE TOUGHTEST IMMIGRATION LAW IN THE NATION

Well, it finally has happened------South Carolina state legislature recently passed what may well be the toughest immigration law in the nation. In all honesty, I believe the state was forced to act due to the fact that Georgia also has passed stricter laws.

The new law requires all business owners to either chech the status of new hires using E-Verify or make certain that all new hires have valid South Carolina driver's licenses. I have no idea how one can verify whether a driver's license is valid or forged.

The new law will go into effect on July 1, 2009 for businesses with 100 or more employees. If there are fewer than 100 employees, the law will kick in July 1, 2010.

I guess we'll all stay tuned to see how this plays out. There will be issues of proper enforcement for sure. In the meantime, won't it be interesting to see if the Federal Government weighs in?

Enforcement of the new Immigration Laws will require not only law enforcement support but support from all citizens of Bluffton, SC to ensure this wonderful city continues to grow as a lowcountry oasis.  Ideas to consider:  Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) welcomes anonymous reporting of illegal immigrant activity and they will send out agents to investigate if claims are substantiated; citizens can also report illegal immigrant workers to the company owners via e-mail or phone.

Within several Bluffton communities, illegal immigration can influence home values.  Of particular note, the Edgefield neighborhood off of Buckwalter Parkway has shown major improvements over the last 12 months due to the strong push of the Homeowner's Association to enforce the covenant rules and regulations and encouraging homeowners to take an active approach to improve property values.  More homeowners are taking pride in their properties through landscaping projects, adding screened porches, installing fences for privacy and expanding their driveways to meet HOA requirements.  With the newly approved Immigration Law in place, this neighborhood and several others are already noticing the positive affects.  Thank you South Carolina voters!
