There are many reasons why the real estate market rose to such crazy high numbers between 2006 -2008. I'm sure you've heard many people's opinion on the rise and also have your own thoughts regarding the rise. The problem now is that anyone that bought during that time period will not be able to sell for that amount of money they paid. Sometimes looking at charts and seeing the lines makes it a bit easier to understand and believe. It's not about your house being nicer than the one down the street. Numbers are numbers. The point of making sure you home looks nicer than any other is so that it is the one that will get the contract.
