Columbia, SC Attractions - Sesquicentennial State Park in Northeast Columbia

Located just off busy Two Notch Road in Northeast Columbia, SC, Sesquicentennial State Park offers a great departure from the hustle and bustle if everyday life. Originally developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a program designed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930's to provide work during the Great Depression, Sesquicentennial State Park is now one of Columbia, SC's favorite green areas. in fact some of the buildings built by the CCC are still in use today. Once ride out into the country, with the growth of Northeast Columbia in the past few decades, the park is now in the center of one of Columbia's largest and fastest growing suburbs.

Sesquicentennial State Park is 1,419 acres of lush and green, natural space backed with wildlife and fun for everybody. There are several nature trails that range from .4 miles to 3.5 miles, the longest of which being a dirt road sized path that circles it's way around the lake. There is a bike trail that's just over 6 miles and takes you to the far side of the park through the woods and further into the sandhills of Northeast Columbia, SC.

Arguably Sesquicentennials main attraction is the pristine 30 acre lake located at the heart of the park. Surrounded by majestic, old hardwoods and hearty pines, the lake is a perfect place for a walk, jog, picnic, or just to relax and watch the ducks. Fishing is allowed and often park goers will see other visitors taking full advantage of this offering. While gas motors are not allowed, you are welcome to bring your own boat, but you must use either paddles or an electric motor.

If you don't have your own boat, that's not a problem, there are paddle boats and canoes available for rent or by the day. And if you're not really into boating, you can always hang out on the many picnic tables and picnic areas scattered all around the lake.

So if you're looking for an opportunity to make your way back to nature or just get away for a while, then I suggest you make your way out to Sesquicentennial State Park and relax for a while. If you come out between 7:30 and 8:00 am Monday through Friday, you may even run into to me on the 3.5 mile loop around the lake. I walk there with my Father on a daily basis. So come out and see what one of Columbia, SC's favorite parks has to offer you. And if you want to bring a furry friend, dogs are allowed, but they must be on a leash and there is even a dog park near the front of the park.
