Published Dec. 29, 2011

For the second straight year, the city of Goose Creek was named the best place to raise kids in South Carolina for 2012 by Bloomberg Businessweek.

“There are more than a few reasons. This quiet, pretty suburb of Charleston has much to offer, from great parks to solid schools to rolling bike trails,” Businessweek’s editors wrote.

Goose Creek was incorporated in 1961 with a little more than 3,000 residents. There were no paved roads and a substandard surface drainage system. Over the past 50 years, the city has grown to the 11th most populated city in South Carolina with more than 35,000 residents.

In 2011, the city celebrated its 50th anniversary themed “Celebrating Our Future.” The year-long celebration included the launch of an official Facebook page, citizen contests, college scholarship giveaways, historic scavenger hunt, outdoor movies, golf tournament, concert series and a fall festival. In October, the city completed its first phase of their downtown redevelopment project on Central Avenue and announced a free wifi network for residents funded byGoogle, which operates a data center nearby at the Mt. Holly Commerce Park.

What GREAT news for this city!
