A rare sight appeared in Greenville South Carolina's skies today. A large four-engine Douglas C-54E Skymaster cargo aircraft flew over the Greenville area, during a two day stay here in the Upstate. The Skymaster, dubbed "The Spirit of Freedom", is a flying museum, dedicated to the Berlin Airlift.
The Berlin Airlift occurred between 1948-1949. During that time, the Russians had cut off Berlin from the rest of Allied controlled West Germany. It's an amazing point in history to study, and I recommend you do so. The world was on the point of World War Three.
Over two million Berliners were going to starve, cut off from food and supplies. The Allies were determined that it would not happen, so they organized an amazing airlift.
I am, of course, an avid pilot and airplane buff, so I was out at the airport today to see the Spirit of Freedom. It is an amazing aircraft, and the museum on board shows the amazing mission that it took part in.
