The Best Realtor Series: Relationships

Some Agents don't realize just how important being well liked is in this business.

We all know of agents who are difficult to deal with and their career is adversely impacted by not having their listings shown as often...

In this business we all need each other. Being kind, professional, courteous and supporting each other goes a long way in this business. I know that when there is so much inventory to show, and the Buyer's agent has to make a decision between my listing and another agent's, my listing WILL get shown. Being well known as the "easy one to work with" scores major kudos within our Real Estate Community.

Just follow my rules:

1. NEVER bad mouth another agent! If you have nothing good to say about the other agent, just don't say anything!

2. Always return other agents' calls promptly!

3. Always go the extra mile for the other agent (offer to bring keys, commission checks, etc).

4. Always brag about the other agent to their clients (this one gets you major kudos, especially when effected in front of all involved).

5. No matter how low the offer, always thank the other agent for it, and let him/her know that you will do your best in presenting it to your sellers (better yet, ask the agent if he wants to present it to them himself).

6. A genuine compliment in a handwritten card after the closing is a lovely gesture. A gift certificate to a nice dinner for two inside the card is even better.

Remember: Without the other Agents' support, you will starve! LOVE YOUR FELLOW AGENTS, AND SHOW IT! THEY CAN MAKE YOU, OR BREAK YOU...

Mirela--Isn't amazing how far being nice and respectful takes you in business? Treating clients and fellow agents with respect and kindness goes a very long way!

I would love to get your input on this!  Any new ideas?

This is so basic and so true! Thank you (kindly!)

Mirela,

Why people in this business are not nice, but mean spirited, is beyond me!!! Thanks,   Fran

You are right about keeping good relationships with other realtors.

Excellent! If this had been a blind post you would have been my first choice if I had to guess who wrote it. :-) Number 2 drives me nuts. I am still waiting for a few agents to call me back from earlier this week AND last week. When they do call back 10 days later they expect me to know exactly which property the are calling back about.

Excellent suggestions each and every one! Returning calls is one of my pet peeves. I really do not understand why agents simply cannot pick up the phone and provide information when it is requested. I really like the hand written card after closing. I am going to add that to my checklist of things to do in every transaction.

Best,

Scott

Thank you for the lovely comments!  I sincerely appreciate them!  It's amazing how many agents forget these basics...

Another wonderful post - love the photo - and a great reminder about cooperation and respect...

Awesome! It doesn't cost you anything to be nice! Why is it that agents take low offers so personal! Never be rude, always say thank you for the offer! In all my years in business I have never had an agent ask me if they could go with me to present the offer! Why not? Are we not both working towards a common goal?

I have an agent in town and when I was working with buyers I would always look for that agents listings to show. Why ,because every time my buyer made an offer on one of his properties, we had a deal! And most of the timwe we presented the offer together!

It is so sad that these agents know that don't come off as likeable and they still think it is the "other" person.  This business relies on other agents to help bring a transaction to the closing table.  I constantly show myself to be friendly no matter what.

Great points to read on a beautiful Tuesday morning!

Mirela, tremendous points. I like the dinner gift card idea. Also, for all agents, promptly reply to emails with questions asked or feedback requests. We all are busy, but a short answer is not hard to write.

Thank you for your lovely comments!  We can all sell more real estate by following these simple pointers...

Hi Mirela,

Professional courtesy with the added touches of grace is what we need and you have done it very well!

I couldn't agree more. Thank you for your post.

Having that particular point of reference will certainly improve the bottom line, not to mention your working environment and your general mood...
