It never ceases to amaze me what I see at the pond behind the house during these dog days of summer. Although rare to see them at the pond, and not as photogenic as other birds, these turkey vultures are a necessary part of the food cycle...

Y'all have a G-r-r-r-reat Sunday... ;-)

Your building consultants for life...
Have to tell you, I really hate these birds. I know they are necessary...but once there was a whole flock in the pine trees by my house, really scared me.
I'm just glad they aren't visiting my house. Do you ever wonder if they are just waiting around for you?
Gosh Russ, I hope not...
Christine, I can understand. The only reason I think that they came as it was a brutally hot day and they drank from the pond...
Great picture and comments. I don't mind these birds. They are beautiful to see in flight. When they circle overhead, it really is the circle of life. :-) For them at least!
I don't see many of those up this way. I did see quite a few when I was in North Carolina visiting my son.
I think they're fun. Whenever I see a bunch of them on the side of the road going after fresh roadkill, it brings to mind a Bird Buffet. I know....I spend too much time behind Door #3.
Nanette - I don't mind them either. As I said, they are not real photogenic, but they do play a part in the natural scheme of things...
June - They are rather prevalent in this area...
Laraine - Nothing wrong with door #3! I just hope that they don't eat your flies...
Now that is a face only a mother could love! LOL!
Tim, I guess you are right...
We have a huge amount of them here in the Pocono's. They are by far not the prettiest bird I have ever seen, but I suppose they serve their purpose. Great shot Mike and Happy Father's Day.
Years ago I lived in a house with lakefront property across the street from the house. You went through a gate with two stone pillars on either side of it to get down to the lake. I looked out one morning and there were two of these lovelies perched one on each pillar. I thought I had entered the twilight zone, LOL
Hi Michael:
Well, not the prettiest of bird huh?
Have a great week....
Michael, We have a lot of these guys around my area. They are quite large and ominous.
Yeah, this is not something I typically see in my neck of the woods. Goes along with that buck you shared with us earlier in the week.
Don't get too close to these things. They smell like what they eat. Yes. I know from experience. It's another story.
My husband always talks about how "nasty" these birds are.. I've never seen one...they don't look so bad.. :)
