Chattanooga's Economy

Chattanooga's economy incorporates a diversified mix of manufacturing and service industries.

Chattanooga businesses include a diverse array of compaies such as: BlueCross/BlueShield of Tennessee, CBL & Associates, The Chattanooga Bakery, Chattem Drug, the world's first Coca-Cola bottling plant (now owned by Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United of Birmingham, Alabama), Coker Tire, Coptix, Covenant Transport, Dixie Carpets & Yarns, Double Cola, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group, Krystal, Hudson Companies, FSGBank, Litespeed, Miller Industries, National Model Railroad Association, Olan Mills, PlayCore Inc., Pathway Polymers, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Tricycle Inc., Unum, Vikus Corporation, Miller & Martin law firm, Astec Industries, Propex (formerly Amoco Fabrics and Fibers), U.S. Xpress Enterprises, and Wortham Laboratories. The city hosts large branch offices of Cigna, AT&T and UBS.

Companies with manufacturing or distribution facilities in the city include DuPont, Rock-Tenn, PSC Metals Inc., Mueller Water Products, Komatsu America Corp.'s Chattanooga Manufacturing Operation, Plantronics, a Targa Resources propane gas terminal, a Chevron gas terminal, Domtar Corp., Norfolk Southern, Aquaterra Engineering, Visant Holding Corp., Akzo Nobel's Alco Chemical, Colonial Pipeline, SRI Surgical Express, Precision Partners' Motor Wheel foundry, Buzzi Unicem, and Columbus McKinnon Corp.'s Dixie Industries. There is also a Vulcan Materials quarry in the city.

On July 15, 2008, Volkswagen Group announced plans to build its new production facility in Chattanooga.The factory, slated to open in 2011, will add to what is already a dynamic and vibrant economy and job market.

In addition to corporate business interests, there are many retail shops in Chattanooga, including two shopping malls: Northgate Mall in Hixson and Hamilton Place Mall in East Brainerd.
