Elected officials of the Montgomery County TN Board voted in a 12 cent per 100 dollar property tax increase last night. Almost simultaneously, Clarksville City Council voted in a 7 cent per 100 dollar property tax increase. To make it a bit more simple, on a home with a tax appraisal value of $200,000, your annual property tax just went up $348.00 a year.
Now I have no issue with responsible taxation. In other words taxing me for the good of the city, county and the people, but somehow I feel this simply is not being done. Case in point - the Montgomery CountyBoard voted on an increase in property taxes - THEN had to create a committee because they did not know what to spend the money on!
Here's a suggestion for our County Leaders - use it on SCHOOLS!
Now, with the recent re-evaluation of home values in Clarksville and Montgomery Countyand every home seeing a huge increase in perceived value - I am sure that the combination of this and the new increases will bring allot of revenue into the coffers of our county and city governments. The question is, how will our elected leaders use this money?
Can we trust them to spend this money wisely or have past decisions made us wary? I am sure that they appreciate that all eyes are on them and the great people of Clarksville and Montgomery County are not going to stand for foolish spending given the increases we have seen.
This is a great City and County to live in. I sincerely hope that the new revenues will be utilized to better serve our citizens and their families!
Regards,
Tim Cash
