The Historic Downtown Franklin 1937 Theater, currently under renovation, lit up Main Street this Saturday when the a full-scale replica of the iconic 1930's art-deco sign was turned on for the first time. The Franklin theater which operated from 1937 until it fell into disrepair and closed Jan. 7, 2007, plans to be selling tickets in early spring. For some, that day can't come soon enough.
It was the Heritage Foundation, with the support of hundreds of donors, was able to purchase the Franklintheater in late 2007 and begin the restoration. Hasting Architecture was selected for the design work, with the goal to seek inspiration from the Franklin theater's Depression-era Art Deco design and make it a state-of-the-art, multi-use entertainment venue for live performances, movies and events.
The renovated Franklin theater will feature 1930s art deco and 21st century technology, while still serving pizza and
beer just like it once did in the 30s. Walking into the Franklin theater may feel like traveling back in time, but once the sound system starts up, it's fast-forward to the cutting-edge present.
The Franklintheater will be a LEED-certified project, meaning it will meet national standards for green buildings, and will be the first LEED-certified restoration in Franklin. The size of the two buildings comprising the Franklin Theater will include a catering kitchen, green room, storage and backstage space. The new lobby will be much larger than the old one, making more room for concessions. The balcony, gone for more than 40 years, is coming back with this restoration and includes a luxurious lounge area. The auditorium will accommodate movies, live performances and events. Sound and production quality will be state-of-the-art to welcome all of our local talent that makes Music City Music City.
