"Trick or Treat!"..............Halloween marketing made easy

Visit Extreme Pumpkins to see some really wild Halloween pumpkins

It's almost Halloween again and soon those little ghosts and goblins will be ringing your doorbells shouting that age on demand: "Trick or Treat!"

And if you don't come across with a goody or two you could end up with your buggy setting on top of your barn or your outhouse turned over. Oh wait; that was what your grandparents did, but you get the idea. Give the kids a treat or you could find yourself tricked.

I've developed what has became a tradition in our house to not only pass out treats for our visitors but get some marketing mileage out of it as well.

I visit the local store and buy several bags of pretty good stuff, i.e. miniature candy bars, suckers, bubble gum, etc., along with a few boxes of plastic sandwich baggies (I like the Ziploc bags best personally).

Halloween trick or treat bags

For illustration purposes only; giving an 8 year old a Slim-Fast bar and a couple of Special K bars is a guaranteed way to get your yard rolled or your windows soaped. We didn't seem to have any handy candy bars in the Lee household today ;-)

I then stuff each bag with one or two miniature candy bars, a couple of suckers, a few pieces of bubble gum AND two of my business cards.

Here's a list of benefits:

  • My business card is sort of a "Good Housekeeping" seal of approval that the candy is OK. In these times with perverts putting needles, razor blades, and goodness knows what else into kid's Halloween candy parent need all the help they can get.
  • It also get my business card in front of a mom or dad I probably wouldn't be able to reach ordinarily.
  • Since I put lots of good stuff into each bag it also sets me up as the "Good Guy Realtor" who gave their kids some nice stuff.
  • Last, and probably least, it makes my Halloween candy tax deductible as a business expense. ;-)

So if you want to make a hit with kids and parents alike, consider bagging up some Halloween treats and throwing in a couple of your business cards. It only takes a hour or so to bag up a BIG batch of candy to pass out and I guarantee you it will not only be a hit but it may bring you some business.

Always market yourself at any opportunity Great blog

Here is an idea.  Add magnets from the office supply store on the back of the business cards.  The parents or the youngsters may stick them on the fridge.  The children in my neighborhood have asked me on several occasions for my mags.

I enjoyed reading your recent post to Active Rain.  Thanks  We always distribute pumpkins to every house in my farm.  We then have a pumpkin decorating contest and give out toys r us gift certificates for the winners.  This will be our fourth year doing this.  I have sold more homes in this one particular neighborhood than anyone!

Any opportunity is good to get your name out there.

This is what I enjoy so much about AR...folks are always thinking outside of the box and sharing their ideas...

Jim,

Can I trick or Treat at your house? :0) Seriously though! Good advice, I am a big marketing person.

This is an excellent idea...Thanks. Also, you made me laugh when you illustrated what not to give. My friend's brother works at a vitamin store, and one year they gave out vitamin C instead of candy. That did *not* go over well with the kids or parents. lol.

Exactly what's wrong with your goodie bag? Kids need healthy stuff. But I guess you don't need the extra toilet paper or eggs. :-)

I'd actually planned to do this. Someone else suggested it's not too early for calendars so I'll probably order some of those too. I made some other suggestions for fall marketing in a post last week. Glad to see others are thinking the same way.

Good idea..will save money on my kids dental bills:)

We recently moved to a new home Thomas; I'm not giving out the address until November 1st. ;-)

Seriously, our new neighborhood is much more user friendly so I'm anxious to see what sort of response my old idea has here.

Nothing wrong with healty eating Toni but there also nothing wrong with an occasional Snickers bar either.

When I was a kid I always looked forward to Halloween and going trick or treating; it was a bad night if we didn't end up with at least two large bags of candy. We used pillow cases or the big grocery store bags.

Ahhh, just what we all need...some good humor. It's just what the doctor ordered.

Thanks for making me smile. LOVE your blog! Will you check my blog out, e mail me with any suggestions??

I look forward to reading more for your blog

Great idea... make your halloween candy tax deductible.  Why not?  And you get a little extra real estate exposure while you're at it.  Again, great idea.  Thanks for sharing.

I agree with Margaret!  Great Idea!

>> Last, and probably least, it makes my Halloween candy tax deductible as a business expense

Oh, you got me laughing with this one. I'm looking at halloween in a new way. Cute idea.

As a  former C.P.A  and tax accountant, I  commend you on the great tax advice.   I will definately use this great marketing idea.

Ooohhh, Penny. What a neat spin! If they don't come to you...go to them. Treat or Treat! One could use the doorhanger bags just in case there's no answer. :-)

Can you guess which candy bars I give out ... with my card stuck on them?

I'm surprised none of the fussbudgets are leaving comments about how terrible you are to commercialize Halloween. =)  If I recall correctly, you mentioned this last year-and I'm going to copy you wholeheartedly this year!

I think only the Wiccans could possibly object Leigh. ;->

I've recycled this idea for several years now.

That's a great idea.  I was planning on doing something like that myself this year.... now I know I will!  I thought adding a toothbrush with the candy would also make me the nice and caring Realtor ;)

Great Idea! We love it! No tricks here, only treats. Happy Halloween to you also.
Loved the extreme pumkins site.

Great idea - thanks for sharing.

We plan on making several goodie bags with candie and business cards in them and have an open house the same night, maybe even do a 1 day only special!

This is a great idea, I also use individual wrapped bags of popcorn that I have created a label to go on the bag, it says:
" Just Popped" by to wish you a Safe and Happy Halloween, then I have all of my contact information and the Keller Williams Realty logo, so it looks pretty nice! I staple a business card and dress it all up with some black and orange ribbon and thought about tying to the mailboxes. But I could changed up the wording and somehow still using the " just popped" and give them out at the door.

Great post!  I was just debating whether or not to include my business card with the candy.  My husband says 'no' since trick-or-treating is a 'sacred' children's tradition.  I agreed with him until I read your post and it changed my mind.  Wasn't sure if it was your baggie idea, or the fact that it would be a tax deduction :).  Thanks for the great idea!

Great Idea! I have the bags and the magnets and I figure I'll probably even include a granola bar or other healthy snack in there with a candy bar and some other goodies. I'm looking forward to Halloween this year!

Jim,

I heard you the most Popular agent in Knoxville. It shouldn't be that hard finding your house for some Candy :0) I'm coming over with Neal Bloom..

Tom Weiss

Jim, I think this is a fantastic idea. I'm going to trust you and make the parents feel safe.

Jim - I am laughing so hard. I was trying to figure out just WHO you would give the slim fast bars to! I think you need to lose a little weight and would you like to buy a house from me?

Jim, how terribly clever of you...thank you for the suggestion. It's a GREAT idea.

Come ahead boys, just look for the glow in the sky; I'm making one of those flaming pumpkins

Check out this video

***WARNING!*** The pumpkin carver is also in the.....ah, "adult toy" business; don't click on those links if you don't want to see his products. Nothing offensive appears at the link to the flaming pumpkin video above; you have to click in for that sort of stuff

I apologize if these links offend anyone; I just thought the flaming pumpkin video was pretty cool.

My old partner did this last year and got a listing out of it!

I am having my assistants do them up and give them to a lot of people a know to hand out on halloween.

(10/09/07 10:44PM) — Rick Grand

that is a stellar idea! I think I'll have to think up something similar to that...good for you.

Jim, you might want to click on that link and take a real good look.

?????

Jim

I never thought about the tax benefit- GREAT IDEA!   Since we do candy anyway, it is an added plus.

I will be doing that for sure this year.  Thanks!

Hey Jim, I'm back. I originally got this idea from a gym owner in Indiana. She sent ads home with her students to drop in treat bags at Halloween.

If any of you are close enough enough to people in your SOI you could have them pass out the treat bags in their neighborhoods. Just think of it as a "referral" source. :-)

Jim, I just had an idea that you might be able to use to your advantage even more-

put a note in that bag, attached to your card, offering to pick up the jack-o-lanterns after Halloween, to be transported to the local landfill/composting center if they just give you a call/email with their address. Or rather, send your assistant to pick up the jack-o-lantern.

Oh- and put an alternative on the back of the note, like a How-To Compost the pumpkin themselves.

hmmm... I am not usually full of ideas so late at night LOL

(10/21/07 05:46PM) — Judy Kincaid, Tampa Home Stager

This is a great idea.  I bought some Ziploc bags the other day with pumpkins on them just because they were cute but I really didn't know what I was going to do with them.  But I do now....thanks, Jim, for sharing this idea.
