I was following a friend to get a flat tire fixed when I saw a large dog running down the middle of the road. I immediately pulled over to try and get the dog but my friend pulled over faster than me! We are both huge dog lovers! The big furry dog had a collar on with a phone number and address. As I held what felt like a 150lb dog to keep him from running away, my friend dialed the number. No one answered so he left a message. It was hot and we knew we couldn't just leave this dog to wander farther away or get hit on the busy road. My friend recognized the address as not being too far away so he loaded up this massive dog into his truck to take him home.
We turned around and headed back to where the dog's collar indicated he lived. As I followed my friend we passed yet another dog running down the side of the road. My friend kept going and I pulled over and called this dog to come see me. She came wagging her tail and was so hot. I looked at her collar and the phone number was different than the other dog and there was no address this time. I called the number and only got voice mail. I left a message and hoped someone would call me back. There I sat, in the extreme heat with a lost dog and no address, and no idea what to do. I couldn't just leave her to be run over.
I waited a few minutes and then my friend returned from dropping off the first dog. He stated that the owner was on her way to get the dog that I was holding. They had both gotten out and the owner was looking for them. We gave the dog some cold water to drink and within a few minutes her happy and relieved owner arrived.
So much time had passed since our journey began that the leaking tire was now completely flat and we couldn't drive on it. After a can of fix a flat and a long wait for a portable air compressor to refill the tire we were on our way again! Our plans for the day certianly took a big change. But making sure that two much loved dogs were returned safely home was well worth the inconvience of dealing with a flat tire! I know if my dogs were lost I would be devastated and so thankful that someone took the time to make sure they got home safely. I'm really happy we were able to Pay It Forward and help two dogs return home!
