Investing in the Smokies-- Is it a Good Idea?

Locals have always said that in economic downturns, Sevier County is "the last to go and the first to come back" and that seems to be true once again. There's a different feeling in the air around town these days, which very nearly resembles optimism! Driving around town, there is active development and growth everywhere, and people are making long term commitments to our area. Here's just a sample of what's happening:

  • The 25 Million dollar "Titanic" attraction opened April 8, 2010 on the Pigeon Forge Parkway.
  • Construction continues at Eagles Landing on 18 additional holes and a new clubhouse.
  • The local Wal-Mart is in the process of remodeling and updating the store. It's a little chaotic right now but will be worth it in the end!
  • The Christmas Place has purchased and completely remodeled the old Bob Evans restaurant, and will be opening that new dining experience next month.
  • Our five-screen movie theatre is scheduled to open next Month in Walden's Landing.
  • The local paper reports that investors are close to closing a $70 million deal to finish the Belle Island project in Pigeon Forge--already 85% complete!
  • The multi-million dollar Gateway project is well under way at the entrance to Gatlinburg-- this combination of retail and hotel accommodations will bring a great boost to the "quiet" end of town!
  • Ripley's has added a major penguin exhibit opening this month in Gatlinburg.
  • The Carousel Commercial center at light #3 in Gatlinburg has been rebuilt after the fire, staying true to the original unique architecture. Going into this special landmark space is a new restaurant specializing in natural foods.
  • The City of Gatlinburg is continuing the project of moving all utilities underground, with great success.
  • The multi-million dollar Nantahala Outdoor Center opened Easter weekend at the entrance to the National Park at light #10-- after a major remodel of the old Open Hearth.
  • Remember All American Pancakes that burned down at light #3 in PF? Well that has been replaced by a new gas station and retail center-- opening soon!
  • Dollywood has added a new Adventure attraction, and has started its own overnight rental company.
  • The beautiful new $11 million library just opened in Sevierville this month.

We could go on and on-- but the point is, there are a lot of folks who are committed to this area, and who are making huge investments to improve it. And don't forget the National Park! Newly repaired and upgraded roads have just opened on I-40 from Ashville and the Cades Cove Loop Road-- ahead of schedule even!
