Now that it's time to ring in the New Year, I am asking "What are your traditions on welcoming the New Year?
Do you make a resolution? Do you eat a certain food? Do you celebrate with fireworks? Do you watch "the ball drop" in Times Square every year?" Do you drink champagne at midnight and kiss your sweetie?"
The way I spend New Year's Eve differs each year, but it usually involves, family, friends and alcohol, ( no drinking and driving, of course), a kiss from my hubby, a "few" glasses of champagne and a pathetic attempt to remember all the words of "Auld Lang Syne".
As for New Year's Day, we stick to the old Southern tradition of EATIN BLACK EYED PEAS! Black-eyed peas are a symbol of good luck for the coming year. Some folks say you should eat one pea for every day of the year, so you'll have good luck for an entire year.
SO, WHAT DO YOU DO???

Don't recall what we did way back when the children were little but as they grew we fell into a routine of ordering a feast of Chinese food and heading out to an early movie. Now that they're older my wife and usually stick to that routine ourselves and spend a quiet night at home. Don't think I've ever eaten Black Eyed Peas.... I'll have to look next time I'm in the supermarket to see if they sell them up here.
Never Had a Black Eye Pea.
We generally have a bottle of Champaign for midnight (Same bottle for at least 6 years). One day we are going to make it to Midnight on New Years Eve. If our kids are asleep there is no reason for the adults to be awake either. We generally go to bed. My wife goes to bed before I generally so I play on the computer and listen to music with my Headphones on LOUD.
New Years Day my wife takes the Kids to her parents house and a family gathering. I stay behind and strip the entire house of Christmas, clean, replace the furniture, get everything in order and try and convince the kids that it was all a dream. Then we order pizza watch a movie and have a drink.
I enjoy celebrating New Years Day by going out somewhere to walk or hike (both have to involve a view...better to see into the New Year!) or a drive somewhere beautiful, like the Skagit River to see the Bald Eagles. Somehow all of those activities enhances the idea of a New Year and a Fresh Start.
My parents still keep with an Italian tradition - lentil soup. I have done this off and on but I hear of a lot of people who eat Chinese food. I don't actually know the significance of either, but I don't mind trying them.
I had never heard of the Chinese food tradition, thanks for sharing. Oh, and eat some BLACK EYED PEAS! They're yummy!
Maybe this year I'll begin a tradition of making resolutions - does anyone actually keep them?
We usually spend it with family, lately just been me, hubby and our boys. Watching the New Years Celebrations on television while we play board games, eat our normal snacks for the night, chips and dip, popcorn, pigs in a blanket that sort of stuff. As our boys get older it gets more fun for us.
Dana - Sounds perfect! I was looking at statistics on about keeping your resolutions, it wasn't pretty! Key phrase in your comment that matters the most is "have a good time"!
Marey - Sounds like a great time, it doesn't get much better than that!
I just like to stay home, keep calm and reflect.
