Walden on Lake Houston is having its Community Garage Sale tomorrow, Saturday, October 24. This community-wide event always brings out the shoppers! It's a great way for residents of Walden on Lake Houston to have traffic driven to their garage sales by community advertising.

I have a friend who is an expert on how to set up a garage sale. So, anytime I wanted to participate in the Walden on Lake Houston Community Garage Sale - I called Sue for assistance! She would come over and set up the sale with me. Here are her rules:

• Departments. Categorize everything for sale. Kitchen, clothing, jewelry, toys, books & 8-Tracks (LOL-I guess that would be music). You get the idea. This makes your garage sale shopper-friendly.
• Payment. Wear a fanny pack for your cash. Don't use a cash box that could go missing if it's busy and you turn your back. Not that it would happen but I'm just saying.
• Security. Don't let strangers in your house. Every year someone would inevitably ask if they could use the bathroom. I let them a few times (sucker for kids) but it made me a bit nervous each time.
• Workers. Enlist your husband to help. Guys are great negotiators. They are willing to wring that extra 25 cents right out of that 10-year-old's hand. (not-so-much a sucker for kids) Plus when he says later that he can't believe you sold your Dooney-Bourke handbag for $4.35, you can come right back with "What about your attempt to sell the cat? What was that about?"

I have another friend whose husband wanted to hold the garage sale. She told him to go for it. She wasn't going to get involved. A few weeks after the sale, he decided to take over cutting the lawn from the service they had been using. My friend asked, "Are you going to use the weed-whacker for the entire lawn? Because you sold your lawn mower in the garage sale." Oh.
