It was around 10AM on Thursday morning. I had just left a clients home in North Austin to pick up a listing agreement. I made a quick pit stop at
the Arboretum Shopping Center which is located directly next to the Echelon buildings. I was so close I could have thrown a baseball and hit one of the Echelon buildings. I walked out of a local Austin boutique shop called Heroes and Legacies, where I was picking up some cigars for a client that I had helped purchase a home.
I saw this cloud of smoke rising from what looked like the highway. I assumed it was a car and thought nothing of it. I got in my car and got up to the intersection and I noticed the cloud of smoke just kept getting bigger and BIGGER. So I was trying to figure out how I was going to get around this car wreck but it was impossible because I was right smack in the middle of what I'd soon find out was a HUGE disaster.
So I get up on the highway and see flames everywhere! Debri was flying all over and pink insulation was floating around in the air above the highway. I just can't describe in words what I was thinking. I knew it was a pretty populated building. I remembered I had to go inside that building a few years back when I got randomly audited by the IRS. The firetrucks had arrived while I was at a stand still on the highway. They blocked everyone off from getting close to the scene. . People were getting out of their cars and taking pictures and filming the fire. (I had my camera in my car but the BATTERY DIED! Trust me I was thinking of the RAIN!) ERR!
I didn't have any clue what had happened to the building at the time. A close friend of mine who is a pilot called me. He was standing next to the scene. He had also happened to be driving past the building and SAW the crash. He told me it was a plane, I couldn't believe it! He said there was no way it could have been an accident. Shortly there after I started getting calls from everyone I knew confirming the plane crash.
For those of you that read the manifesto he wrote, I must agree he had some valid points, but that isn't any reason to go DRIVE a PLANE into a building! What is that going to SOLVE?? Not to mention there were other small businesses in that building besides the IRS!
Every system has its flaws, I think we're still extremely fortunate to live in such a great country. My condolences go to all of the families that lost a loved one in the building. Let's give thanks to the police and firefighters for doing such a great job!
