Tips For Living Greener
Recycle everything that comes into your home. You will be amazed at how many items you use in daily life can be recycled. If you don't have the option of recycling in your neighborhood check for local facilities that will allow you to drop your recycled items at their site. There are some companies that will pay you for your recycle items. The Environmental Protection Association estimates that about 75% of the waste produced in the USA is recyclable.
Aluminum Cans-Many communities have aluminum recycling as part of the normal trash collection. Some areas have companies that will pay for your aluminum cans.
Electronics-Computers may be recycled sometimes when you buy a new one. If they won't accept the old one as trade in/trade up, you may donate it to Goodwill or another local charity.
Glass-Many communities have glass recycling as part of the normal trash collection.
Cardboard and Paper Products-Newspapers, magazines, product wrapping are all commonly recycled. Items like pizza boxes or Chinese paper takeout containers may not be recycled because of food and oil residue.
Construction materials- When you update your home often the older materials may be donated to Habitat For Humanity or similar organizations.
Eyeglasses-Many organizations collect eyeglasses to donate to charities around the world.
Toner and Ink cartridges may be donated or turned into several office supply companies for store credit.
Clothes and shoes should always be donated to a charity organization when you have decided they no longer belong in your closet. There are a number of worthy charities in every neighborhood. If the clothes are expensive, you may be able to sell them on consignment with a local retail shop. There are several shops like this all over Austin.
Cell Phonescan also be recycled or donated to various charities. Make sure you include the accessories, operation manual and phone charger. When I donate my old phones I put everything in a large ziplock bag to ensure all the pieces remain together.
