I was reading the Austin American Statesman this morning and found an article about Martin Luther King's visit to Austin, TX in the 60's. He came to make a speech regarding civil rights and students and about making a difference. According to the info, he was to stay at the Driskill Hotel (which is a very wonderful historical hotel in downtown). One of the students that was helping out with the arrangements of his speech, stay, food, etc thought that someone might say disparaging remarks to him in the large hotel, since segregation was still in force in 1962.
Instead of going to the Driskill, he stayed in the "Quiet Room" at the Texas Union on the UT campus. This was a small guest quarters just large enough for a small bed, chair and a bathroom. Mrs. Perry, who is now the Sr. VP at UT, was the young person that made sure he was comfortable and secured. She said Mr. King, was very gracious. I am so glad times have changed somewhat, we all need to just get along.
