According to a recent study conducted by bizjournals of the largest 50 metropolitan areas in the country, Austin was named among the least stressful places to live in the United States. As an Austin-area resident for the past 20 years, I am not surprised to hear this, as I have always described this town as laid-back and optimistic with a youthful spirit.
Included in the criteria for this ranking were the following:
Austin tied (at zero) with the lowest number of unhealthy air days annually. We also had the lowest number of circulatory-system deaths. Additionally, although it is a dubious honor, we had the lowest murder rate out of the top 50 metros.
They indexed all of the cities on a scale from most stressful to least stressful, with zero as the median. Austin's stress index was actually negative, at -4.76. Cities that ranked better than Austin were Virginia Beach-Norfolk, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and Oklahoma City. Mr. Crouch - My brother loved Austin when he lived there, I think it was for a little over a year. This is some very interesting info and something to consider, especially since moving can be a huge stress to begin with. I always heard it was a great area, but low-stress to boot...that's tough to beat.
Jason - Great. Another reminder of what it was we loved about Austin. Not that Boston doesn't have its many great features, it surely does... but low stress is not one of them.

Oh come on you know it is actually the Washington DC area. I mean really there is absolutely no stress in sitting on the highway for three hours because VDOT didn't have the salt and sand trucks ready when an ice storm hits. Congratulations on living in such a great city.

My only question: Why isn't everyone from both coasts and throughout the mid-West packing up their bags and moving to Austin?
If they were to do so, you'd be quite a busy fellow. I imagine you are getting quite busy anyways from all the buzz about Austin.

Jason, I have 3 different friends who relocated to Austin and they all love it there. Hopefully, I'll get to visit soon.
I love it! Austin, that is. My daughter went to grad school at UT and we agreed that is the city to live in, when you're in Texas!

SARDI - Yes, it is a very laid-back and friendly atmosphere around here. In fact, I have had MANY clients from other states who move here and comment on how friendly everyone is. It's a cool town!

Wow. This ALMOST makes me want to move. But Austin TX is further north than Daytona Beach FL, right? I know San Antonio is almost straight across from us. I think you're to San Antonio as Jacksonville is to us. And Jacksonville is usually about 10 degrees colder. Sorry. 10 degrees difference is more than this sissy can handle =P

Jason- What great reports for you and your town! Honolulu Hawaii has the cleanest air in all the USA and 3rd in the entire world. They also have the longest life span there too. I am surprised it did not make the list. Katerina

Jason -- I just want to know, is it above 10 degrees in Austin?!?!? If so, I'm packing and coming down there. I want stress free and WARM. Today's high should be about 7.
Great post Jason, Austin is all that and more. A great city to live in and the energy there is awesome. But when folks prefer a smaller community send them to Kerrville. When are you going to get this way. Would love to show you that home in Bandera. It has been reduced.
Man...looks like I gotta move to Austin. Hemet's a small town, but recently I've been slammed with work - so it's got that fast-paced, California stress level for me right now.
I only played Austin once with my band. If I had known you back then, I would have had a closer look.

Good to know as most of my husband's family all live in Austin... However, I'm surprised about the zero days of unhealthy air because they all complain about their Cedar allergies and it's Cedar in the air that causes the allergies.
LISA - We are about 80 miles north, and my wife is actually from San Antonio. She said it is slightly cooler, but not really noticably so.

Of course, that would ensure the path to the quickest bachelor degree is likely.
