Maybe Austin Is Too Weird!

Did you know that in Austin one can legally ride ones bicycle on the shoulder of the local freeway Loop 1, locally known as MoPac? Did you also know that some of our citizens actually do it? You would have to have nerves of steel in order to even attempt this; some of you may know that Austin is home to some of Texas' worse drivers who spend a good portion of their drive on MoPac veering over onto the shoulder. Follow my drift?

Did you also know that one can walk on the Loop 1/ MoPac's shoulder just to get to where your going? I don't mean the poor drivers who's car breaks down and has to walk in order to get help or to just get to safety, I mean the guy or girl (I have seen a girl do it) who just wakes up in the morning, leaves the house on foot and decides that MoPac is the route that they will take. It's true. We have some brave if not, dare I say, foolish souls who take advantage of this loop hole that needs to be closed and soon.

Currently you can only do this south of the river/ Lady Bird Lake and in one small area MoPac is the only way to get from Southwest Pkwy to 360, but there is no reason to ride your bike or walk on freeway shoulder north or south of those locations.

This sounds kind of weird to me! Keep Austin Weird!
