Our Date Night at the Museum!

My wife and I had a date night last night, and we decided to attend "B Scene", which is a soiree held each month at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas campus. They have a DJ playing tunes from various eras, finger foods, beverages, along with some brief tours of the art itself.

My wife Pam has been there a number of times, while this was only my second visit. Quite frankly, Pam is probably qualified to conduct the tour herself, as she is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to art. I enjoyed the tour, but I learned just as much from wandering around with her alone.

Before we entered, I asked my wife how many people we would see that I know, "Maybe three?". She said it would be "just one or two" in her opinion. It seems that we inevitably run into someone I know when we are out somewhere, and last night was no different. We saw a past client that I hadn't seen in many years. Pam remarked that he looked a lot like Peter Sellers, which was something I hadn't considered before, but it was pretty accurate after I thought about it.

Pam was anxious to show me her favorite painting there, which is "Elysium" by Hans Hofmann. I was going to include a picture of it here, but I cannot find it anywhere online. The picture to the left is another one by Hofmann, called "Pompeii". The docent who toured us clearly also liked this painting, since she spent several minutes talking about it, and about Hofmann's influence on other artists.

The music was an eclectic mix of current dance songs and old familiar tunes. I heard "We Will Rock You" while we were looking at Renaissance art upstairs, which is an unusual juxtaposition. Later, I heard the Doors while we were checking out the "WorkSpace" area, which is currently dedicated to art inspired by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. One of the more interesting pieces was made entirely of broken glass from New Orleans, shaped like hurricanes and lit from underneath. It was really interesting that the artist took something so plain and made it beautiful, but I suppose that is often the essence of art.

After the party, we went to one of our favorite restaurants in north Austin, Golden Wok. It's an upscale Chinese and Dim Sum place which never fails to impress us. We enjoyed the cashew chicken and kung pao chicken last night. I would highly recommend this establishment if you live here or if you are planning a visit. The service and food are top-notch, and you won't break the bank.

I am already looking forward to the next "B Scene"!

Jason, sounds like a great evening out on the town. Thanks for bringing us along.

Jason, sounds like a great night, intersting musical choices huh? Wonder what the intention there was...

I was thinking about you earlier wondering how the date went.  Sounds like you and Pam had a good time. That should have earned you a few brownie points.

Jason:

Sounds like you had a great time. We love Art museums too.

good move! In the words of Thomas Mann: "Religion is what we believe, politics is what we think, and art is how we feel"... I think immersing the self in art-full and creative ways is a profound path for healing... shapes & images connecting us to chords and counterpoint that have no words, only energetic aspects... a primal language of the soul. Sometimes, I imagine my soul as an art museum, trying to view and re-view framed/captured images... some that I brought in through my experiences, others that have come into view over time, from ancestral and archetypal libraries... An art museum is a breath of fresh air for the soul...thanks for sharing your wonderful day on eARTh.

Jason, It sounds like  you had a wonderful date night at the Art museum.  Our daughter's degree is in Communication Design and her favortie subject was Art history.  The class really didn't have much to do with what her degree was in but she LOVED it.  She had to take both Art history 1 and 2.

HI Jason, will you and Pam adopt me?  Sounds like my kind of date/night...and I would have to beg Bill to go with me, and he would complain the whole time.  I once convinced him to go see Phantom of the opera with me and he slept through the whole thing.  Does not do much for conversation later about the play :).  I love art, but no where as knowledgeable and your Pam on the subject.  The post I did on the ladies club art & chocolate thing had some pieces from a fairly famous artist here in Houston.  This collection of 4 bottles is around $20K, and owned by a fellow artist and friend of mine here in Katy Terri Biber who does some interesting work.  She is also a giver and donates her time with underprivileged kids to teach them art as a way of building self esteem.  In case you missed it here is the picture I took of her 4 bottles.

By the way I'm watching your points daily...GO GO GO, go Jason...#1 :)  Your #1 Fan, Liz

DANNY - It was a terrific night.  Thanks for stopping by to read about it.

VANESSA - I enjoyed the music they picked, but it was weird hearing it in that setting.

JESSE - I think you may be right about the brownie points, but I had a great time, too!

MIKE - One of the benefits of having my mother-in-law live with us is that the kids love her helper and she is available with some regularity to babysit in the evenings.  Gotta like that!

PAM - It was a terrific evening and I look forward to going again next time.

SUSAN - We really did have a great time.  Thanks for your friendship and continued support!

ALAN - Maybe you guys could join us next time.

MARA - Thanks for your terrific comments.  Food for thought there.  Good stuff!

MARCHEL - Actually, Art Appreciation was one of my favorites in college as well.  I was a business major with a minor in economics, but music and art were always fun diversions.

LIZ - I honestly really enjoy stuff like this.  We are going to the opera on the 18th to see "Carmen", which should be awesome.  Only $20k for the bottles?  Give me three sets.  :-)  Thanks for your continued support - I am trying!
