DOC SEVERINSEN AND THE SAN MIGUEL 5
Sunday, May 8th and Monday, May 9th at Boerne Champion High School at 7:30pm
CUTLINE: Classical guitarist and composer Gil Gutiérrez is a virtuoso who consistently delivers energetic, electric performances. If it hadn't been for a fateful encounter five years ago, Gil and Doc would not have been performing together at Carnegie Hall earlier this year. "Compared to Severinsen, Gutiérrez is far less well known, but equally brilliant. Steeped in classical, Latin American and jazz traditions from an early age, he plays guitar as if he were born to it." - New York Examiner
BOERNE, TX - April 17, 2011. The greatest icon of trumpet virtuosity will grace the stage in only two Texas venues this year...Houston (Jones Hall) and Boerne (Champion High School)!! Celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Houston...and two performances, including Mother's Day, in Boerne...Doc Severinsen will headline both events for the ultimate live music experience.
Doc Severinsen's latest project is classical Spanish music with a jazz flair. Doc Severinsen and the San Miguel 5 are comprised of guitar, violin, bass, and percussion...and of course the soaring trumpet...an experience that is indescribably brilliant. The vivacious trumpeter and band leader will join four world-class musicians in performing gorgeous ballads, both Latino and American, plus some great movie music and the popular gypsy jazz (ala Django Reinhardt). "Severinsen and his new colleagues make a marvelous quintet." - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
When Severinsen retired to the famously bohemian San Miguel, Mexico, it was only a matter of time before his path crossed with Guitarist Gil Gutiérrez.
According to Doc, "Gil gave me new life with my music"...and Gutiérrez answers back "I thank Doc for teaching me to appreciate music with my heart."
The ensemble's violinist, Charlie Bisharat, has graced the albums of such pop phenoms as Alanis Morissette, The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith. A Grammy Award-winning performer, Mr. Bisharat has performed with Jazz and World Music Artists, been featured in numerous of movie scores, on-screen performances of Austin Powers, The Drew Carey Show, and performs regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
Completing the quintet of musicians are Jimmy Branly (Percussion) and Kevin Thomas (Bass). Branly was born in Havana, Cuba, where he grew up in a rich musical environment of Cuban flavors. Kevin Thomas is an established jazz musician who is comfortable in a wide variety of musical settings including diverse performance credits ranging from Mickey Rooney and Don Rickles to Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli to Stefan Karlsson and Don Menza.
