Humphrey Jackson, one of the original 300 colonists to settle Texas, nick named the site now currently north of US Route 90 "Lick Skillet." The name "Lick Skillet" came from the oxen team drivers the would drink the spring water and lick their skillets clean.

After settling in the area outside Austin's colony along the San Jacinto River, in 1824 the Baron de Bastrop granted Humphrey Jackson to a league and labor of land, which is now part of Harris County. Humphrey Jackson petioned the Mexican government to form the San Jacinto District under the control of Austin's colony. He served both as the alcaldeqv of the district and militia capitan. Humphrey Jackson was buried in Crosby, Texas and Jackson's Bayou is more than likely named after him.

The Southern Pacific Railroad that passes through current day Crosby, Texas is behind the origins of the current town's name. The town was named after engineer G. J. Crosby.
