What Flower Mound Residents need to know about West Nile

Mosquito spraying operations scheduled for Tuesday, August 21 in the Timberview Estates subdivision of Flower Mound have been rescheduled for 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 30 through 4:00 a.m. on Friday, August 31.

As adverse environmental conditions such as wind or rain can negatively impact the effectiveness of spraying, treatment operations will only be conducted during optimal conditions. Public notification of the spraying will be conducted through the Town of Flower Mound's website, FMTV, broadcast and print media outlets, and neighborhood signs.

The Texas Department of State Health Services recently confirmed that mosquitoes trapped in the Timberview Estates and Timbercreek Park subdivisions in Flower Mound tested positive as carrying the West Nile virus. Residents in the neighborhoods being sprayed are advised to minimize exposure when possible. The following precautionary steps are also advisable:

· Stay indoors during spray events if possible
· If outside or in a vehicle during this time, be alert for the spraying truck and maintain distance
· If the spray should contact skin or eyes, wash skin with soap and water, and rinse eyes with water or saline solution
· Cover fish ponds and bring pets indoors
· Close windows
· Wash outside toys, play equipment, and furniture with soap and water
· Wash exposed fruits and vegetables before eating

There are no special precautions or waiting periods recommended for swimming pools as a result of the spraying. Town staff will continue to conduct additional inspections and monitor the area after treatment. The insecticide used in spraying is applied at ultra-low levels, breaks down quickly, and does not leave a toxic residue.
