Catfish and Seafood in Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is full of German restaurants with great German cuisine like my favorite JaegerSchnitzel at the quaintest restaurant on Main Street but that's another blog. Today I want to tell you about the best Catfish place north of the Pedernales River.

Catfish Haven

Catfish Haven was started about ten years ago by Shane and Ruby Swenson. They moved to the current location about 5 years ago and their business has grown steadily over the years. Shane Swenson

Shane is pictured here. He does catering for any size group, almost any kind of entrees.

Recently Shane and Ruby SOLD the restaurant to Clay and Nora Meadows. The Meadows are just now getting settled in the area. They are from Cincinnati and we want to give them a friendly "TEXAS WELCOME".

If you live in the area or are just visiting, try the catfish. You won't be disappointed.

Catfish dinner The catfish has a cornmeal batter and is cooked just right. The fries have a crispy cheesy seasoning and the pinto beans have been slow cooked for hours.

Anyone like fried okra? This is delicious! There are other good sides as well but one of my favorite ways to judge a restaurant is by the salad bar. This one is fresh and cold. Lots of different kinds of veggies to choose from. Take your pick. Salad Bar

The decor is eclectic with a whole wall of license plates from all over the country. There is a mural on one wall of a river and a fisherman catching those wonderful catfish.

If you are hungry when visiting Fredericksburg, check out Catfish Haven. It is on Hwy 290 West on the right side of the road. It's almost to the edge of town so keep driving and watch for the sign. You'll be glad you did. See you there!

Ricki, I've never been there.  We go to Fredericksburg fairly often and we've missed this restaurant -- we'll have to make sure to look for it next time we're there.

Yes Judi,  You'll love it.  It's all the way down Main St. to the edge of town almost.  I know you like catfish and you'll like this.

I just had a huge dinner 3 hours ago. I am looking at those catfish filets and wondering why I am hungry again?

Goodness.  You really had me confused.  I was trying to think where Highway 290 was until I realized you weren't talking about Fredericksburg Virginia.

That menu sounds like true southern food.  I'll buy some Okra today at our local Farmers Market and fry it up.  Love it.

Trey,    Funny how a picture can make your mouth water :)

Hi Lenn,     It's hard to beat fried okra.  I grew up on it and lots of things fried.  I try to eat more healthy these days and I learned by experimenting you can actually fry okra without the batter if you want to.  I just use a little grape seed oil or olive oil and fry until crisp.  Tastes good and without so many calories.  But it's not the same as the breaded kind.  Love it both ways! Have a great weekend! :)

Hi Ricki... It all sure looks good, but not on my diet! :(

I know Catfish is mmmmmmmmmmm!

You are right the best way to judge a restaurant, is by their salad bar.

Yes Frank,  It's good and worth the trip to Fredericksburg.  About an hour to an hour and a half away.  Fredericksburg has lots to offer so plan on spending the day!
