Last year we didn't get to cut the hay on our little ranch between Hearne and Franklin , Texas and I won't go into the reason's why ...but this week we finally were able to get a cutting. Yea! There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh hay when they just cut it and it is laying on the ground drying out waiting to be baled.
Aparently we and most of our neighbors took advantage of the hot dry weather to cut hay in our area this week. Today we saw lots of trailers passing with both round bales and square bales on board. With the cost of diesel plus increased fertilizer costs, hay will most likely go up in price this year. Where it goes is anybody's guess.
Hay is very important to ranchers in the Brazos Valley Area. I can remember a time when it was like gold and they were shipping it in from out of state. If I am not mistaken it reached between $75 and $100 a round bale. Hope it doesn't get that high though. Texas and the country certainly don't need more radical consumer price increases.

I know what you mean about hay prices Trey. It varies depending on the rains. We had a horse and some years the square bales were pretty inexpensive and during the dry years we were bringing it in from Oklahoma and it got got pricey.
Hay is expensive about everywhere, with our weird weather we have been having you got to make hay when you can or you may not get to for awhile.
Trey, I just love the smell of fresh cut hay! I also love looking at the landscaping with the big rolls of hay and the fresh cut grass. I hope you're doing great! Later in the rain~Deb
Trey, You're right about the prices and the smell, I still love that smell, although my allergies hate it, it still reminds me of my childhood!

I don't know how folks can afford horses. Cars and gasoline are nothing compared to those boogers! :0)
Howdy Trey

Sure hope hay prices don't sky rocket.
