APOLLO 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969 to make history as the first manned mission to land on the Moon. Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene "Buz" Aldrin, Jr. stepped from the Lunar Module onto the surface of the Moon on July 20, 1969. Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot, remained in orbit around the moon in the Command Service Module.

The Space Race, with an emphasis on space exploration, between the United States and the Soviet Union was considered by President Kennedy to be a symbol of national prestige, and his goal was to reach the moon before the end of the 1960's. From a speech in May 1961:

"We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."
