Houston Tx St Patrick's Day Parades
It has been said that Houston Tx has one of the lowest Irish populations in the country living here, but there is no shortage in the amount of Irish Pubs. So even though we may not have a vast amount of Irish citizens, the amount of adopted Irish is huge. There are two parades going on in Houston.
St Patrick's Day 30th Anniversary "1960" Parade:
The 1960 St. Patrick's Day Parade is Sunday, March 16th, 2008 at 2pm. The parade benefits Cypress Creek EMS Public Education Programs like car seat inspections, bike rodeos and ambulance tours for children. The parade has raised more than $100,000 over just the last 5 years. Entries must be received by March 10, 2008.
The 1960 parade begins at 2pm and proceeds down FM 1960 from Champion Forest Drive to Kuykendahl. Last year, over 100 entries and at least 75,000 spectators attended the parade. This is free to the public and is one of Northwest Houston's largest community events. The Parade Grand Marshall is going to be Coach Domicic Kinnear, the Houston Dynamo's Head Coach.
Downtown Houston 49th Annual St Patrick's Day Parade:
The Houston Downtown St Patrick's Day Parade begins on Saturday, March 15th at 12 noon. This is a free event is a 2 hr. event and is one of the largest in the U.S. and plans to have 127 entries for all the Irish and Irish at heart! The parade starts and ends at Minutemaid Park at the intersection of Texas & Hamilton in downtown Houston.
The first St. Patrick's Day parade in Houston dates back to the 1880's and was always on St. Patrick's Day. It started in "Irish Town" by old St. Patrick's Church on Harrisburg. The parade continued until the depression and WWI & WWII when the parade disappeared. However, in the late 1940's, Houston Oilman, Glen McCarthy built the Shamrock Hotel and the Irish culture associated this with good times again. In 1960, two radio personalities announced a St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown Houston and has always carried the theme "Everyone is Irish-If only for the Day". It has been going strong ever since!
All of Houston will be going Green for St Patrick's Day!

Hi Candy,
Sounds like Houston knows how to celebrate St.Paddy's day and it will be a fun time.
Cynthia - I used to go to the 1960 St. Patrick's Day Parade every year, and when I was at KW years ago, we used to have a float in it. I have never been to the downtown Houston parade and would like to check it out.
Candy, Enjoy the parade if you are going...and get photos to share. Ours is in Manhattan but I won't be able to make it this year although I'm sure it will be wonderful.
Carole - I will try to go to the downtown parade as I have never been, I always go to the 1960 parade as it is so close. I will take pictures!
Now Candy, this sounds like a lot of fun! I can't believe we are already into March! I got an email about an After Christmas sale just the other day! Thanks for the post! Later in the rain~Deb
Debra -I can't believe we are into March already either! Time sure flies! I think this parade will be so much fun! Thanks for the nice comment.
Candy:
This is a great localism post and I love the pictures. I am Scottish/Irish so I could come down to Houston for the day and raise the population a bit. Ha.
Alan - Well come on down and join in the fun! Thanks for the comment.
Candy, I did not even know there was a 1960 parade. Has it been going on for a long time?
Marchel - The 1960 Parade has been going for 30 yrs. Don't you remember when we were at KW together and they always had a float in it?
Seems like there is so much to do in Houston. You have a great collection of posts to get people acquainted. St Patricks day should be a blast. Enjoy the parades and I will be looking for your new photos!
Wendy - We are fortunate that we have so much going on all the time! Thank you for the nice comment!
Liz & Marchel - Thank you for the feature!
Candy,
I just wandered over to see what's shaking in Houston. We have family for 25 years in League City. Does that sound like a prison sentence? LOL
Mike in Tucson
Mike - lol No it sounds like they must like it here. I have lived here almost 23 years, myself. Thanks for stopping by.
We have a couple Irish pubs doing some celebrations with live music, but I haven't heard a thing about a parade, that would be awesome! They seem to like protest parades here more than celebration parades...Really sad if I do say so myself!
Todd - I don't get into the protest parades myself, and we are fortunate that our area has the celebration parades. I couldn't get all the names of the pubs in this post that are having St. Patrick's Day parties.
Saint Patricks Day is always so much fun! I remember some great times - always with people, beer or Irish Whiskey, Irish Coffees, Potatoes and lots of greeeennn - never drank the green beer though!
Deborah - I have never drank green beer either. I suppose I would, it is just green food coloring (I hope)
Thank parade sounds like a lot of fun. We're expecting snow this weekend so not a good thing for parades.

Monika - It is 86 today. I don't know if it will be quite that hot, but maybe I am sure will be in the 70's. Perfect weather for a parade.
Candy~This sounds like a fun celebration. Enjoy your day of going green!
