What began Humble TX is the petroleum industry. Loch Energy is located in Humble; the city's roots were from the Humble Oil and Refining Company, which later became part of Exxon. Also abundant in the region was timber and Mr. C.O. Bender started a sawmill that caused Humble to grow in population.

Humble TX received its name from one of the original settlers a wildcatter from England named Pleasant Smith "Plez" Humble. Plez opened the first post office in his home and later served in the role of justice of the peace.
