Interesting and personally unhelpful, the Houston Association of Realtors put out a warning concerning sign ordinance enforement is in full force.
Sec. 4608 (c)(3) of the Houston Sign Code is in full enforcement. The code states that any unlawful sign found within public right-of-way shall be seized and removed. This includes the area by the side of roads and medians.
Section 28-39 of the Code of Ordinances in part states: It shall be unlawful for any person to place or cause to be placed any advertising matter of any kind whatsoever located in the public streets, public sidewalks alleyways, easements, public property or any other public place.
Section 40-7 of the Code of Ordinances in part states: It shall be unlawful for any person to erect, place, build, construct, maintain....sign or other obstruction upon any public street....but the same shall be construed to prohibit and forbid every type and kind of obstruction....
The citations carry a minimum fine of $300 with a maximum of $500 per day per sign. When using directional signs for an open house, this misstake would only be made once.
So since the Houston Sign Ordinance negatively impacts Realtors holding open houses to assist homeowners in selling their homes, what alternatives does the Realtor have to drive traffic to your home. This is where I separate myself from the other Realtors in the industry. I utilize online marketing, specifically through blogging, web posting, social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, high quality photos taken with a SLR digital camera, and virtual tours. Yes, signs can be quick and direct advertising, but if restricted by ordinances alternatives must be sought. Most people start their search on the internet or with a Realtor, and this can be valudated by the data collected by the National Association of Realtors. Work with a Realtor that realizes the benefits of advertising his clients' homes on the internet.
