Fudge Pie, Buttermilk Pie, and a Great New Friend!

I opened my AR blog today for the first time since late last week and found a post from Rick Eichler that I really enjoyed. You see, Ricki and I met for pie at the Bluebonnet Café in Marble Falls last Friday. She chronicles the pie eating in her latest post. I'm not sure if she mentioned that I'm the one who suggested the Fudge Pie that she's still raving about! Ricki is an amazing woman who is as beautiful inside as she is outwardly. It was a true joy to have met and spent time with her.

I Love Fudge Pie

Our visit brought back some great memories. You see, Ricki is from the Kerrville area, which is a little more than an hour from here, and is an area where I have spent countless days hunting and fishing. One of my favorite places to visit is the Lost Maples Café located in Utopia, Texas. It's a small Café that has been around, it seems, forever. The chicken fried steak covers the plate and is nothing short of amazing, but my heart yearns for another bite of their famous Buttermilk Pie! Most people who aren't from The South, moreover the Texas Hill Country, aren't familiar with buttermilk pie. It's like a custard pie, but not as sweet. It's smooth and velvety, melting on your tongue as soon as you get a bite in your mouth. There is a slight citrus flavor that comes from the buttermilk as it cooks. Once you have it, you'll never forget it (kind of like the fudge pie at The Bluebonnet Café in Marble Falls).

So next time you're in the San Antonio or Kerrville area, take some time and cruise out to the small town of Utopia. The name fits the town well, very friendly people, huge oak trees that line the streets, and even old clapboard sidewalks right out of the old west. Make sure and stop by the Lost Maples Café for a piece of buttermilk pie, but make sure to get there before lunch is over because they run out quickly and after it's gone there's no more until the next day. Call Ricki and see if she's got time to meet you there too, she's wonderful to hang out with!

Cherimie - It's wonderful, but go out on a limb and try the buttermilk pie.  I seem to be pushing that today :)

Hi Jem - It can't get any better: a slice of "heaven" and a "heavenly" conversation.

Tana - Let me know next time you're in the area, the pie and coffee are on me!  Or just bring Traci and let her pay for the whole thing out of the Gracy slush fund :)

Marzena - You're right, it is heavenly!  Never pass up the chance to meet a fellow AR member for a slice of pie, especially if it's buttermilk!

YEAH!!!!! I will do that... Good Idea about Tracy..we might as well get all we can out of the little rascal!

Jem, I have got to know Ricki on the rain but not in person.  We should all try to have a Texas get together sometime.  I love chocolate so I'm sure I would like fudge pie but I like buttermilk pie also.  That would be a hard decision.  We have a Bluebonnet restaurant in Tomball.  It is one of those good home cooking Texas restaurants.  I don't know if they have pie though.

So Jem,  I'm sitting here with a case of the afternoon munchies and now your post about pie !  Any chance you would send along the recipe ?

Tana - If we're going to get her to pay for it, why not have dinner first and they stop off for pie afterwards :)

Marchel - Love the idea of doing a Texas get together, you're in charge!  Stop by Chuck's Shrimp on 249 and pick me up some shrimp too!  Or how about some chicken fried steak from Goodson's?

Bill - I do have a great recipe for buttermilk pie and will be glad to pass it along if you're interested.  That said, I don't know how they make the fudge pie at The Bluebonnet, but they do ship nationwide (and it'll be well worth it when you get it!).

Hey, glad you could make that meeting with Rikki, now whose vehicle did you use to make that appointment?

I'll be in town tomorrow let's go have pie!

Rasty Man - You're a good man!  Thanks for letting me use the truck for a few minutes so I could go have some pie.  Sorry I didn't bring you back any, but next time I'm buying!  And thanks for getting that deal closed for me, I really didn't think anybody would be able to do it.  See you tomorrow!

Jem...

If I ever make it to Texas I plan to "Let" you buy me a piece of that Buttermilk Pie :)

Do you know that here in Polk County there is no place we can go to just eat pie? What a bummer :(

TLW...ROAR!

Fudge Pie?  Maybe Marzena will breeze by and pick me up :)  Goodness, she goes so fast we can be back by midnight!

Hey Jem,     What a great post!  You are too kind.  What a great friend you have in Rasty also, but I imagine you have lots of great friends with your terrific personality.  We must plan a Get together with AR friends this Spring or Summer.  A Hill Country location would be great.

TLW - I promise the pie will make you ROAR!  Come by anytime, I promise the pie is on me.  Even bring BB, we'll get him a whole one of his choice!

Carole - Think Marzena can speed by and pick me up to come to The Open?

Ricki - Rasty is a good friend.  I dropped of the car for an oil change just before you called.  AR meeting in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. . . what'll we do when they all want to stay?  You know it is our own little Utopia :)  Peace!

Maybe we better have it in DFW?  Only kidding! :)

Jem, I love the Bluebonnet!!!  Haven't been there in awhile but the last time I was there I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and then a slice of their Coconut Creme Pie!!!    HMMMMMMMMM....it was soooo good!!!  Next time I'm trying the Chocolate Fudge Pie!   You know the filling in those pies is so thick and the meringue must be 3" high -- I don't think BB could eat a whole pie by himself!  Blogging Bertha might be able to though!   :)

A Texas AR get-together -- count me in!!!
