Are you ready for an emergency? September is national preparedness month.

September is national preparedness month. I agree it is best to be prepared with some essentials and not have to run out at the last minute to buy some of these items. With the weather going to turn cold and the start of school, we hear more about different type virus's that may be lurking; this is definitely is a good time to replenish your Emergency Box. Hand Sanitizer (67.6 Fl. Oz) I bought several to put in strategic places throughout the house and to give to the kids. We already see some hurricanes developing; therefore, this is a good time to think about getting some things in order.

Have a variety of batteries on hand and flashlight.

Have a battery powered radio and clock so you can stay informed.

Make sure you have corded or cellular phone; cordless phones don't work without electricity. You will be able to charge from your car.

Have extra cash on hand. Keep plenty bottled water and non-perishable food on hand.

If you are on medication make sure you have extra so you won't run short.

If your electricity goes off check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. Don't forget to reset the main breaker by switching the breaker off and back on. (If you are without power and your neighbors are also without power let your electric provider know). Don't forget to turn off electrical appliances when your service is disrupted.

Keep freezer doors closed and the same with refrigerator door to help preserve food until the power comes back.

Open the circuit breakers to major appliances to turn them off. When power is restored, turn them back on in 15-minute intervals to avoid overloading. (This was a recommendation from PEC)

You may also want to do this with your telephones and computers. Unplug for a ten minutes then plug back in one at a time 3-5 minutes apart. (This was recommended to us )

Be sensible if an emergency should happen. Remember to use lots of hand sanitizer to help prevent some unwanted illness with what they say this year will be risky with the H1N1 (previously called Swine Flu)Find out more about novel H1N1 and CDC's public health response. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/
