Your clients need to update their drivers license once they move!

Once our clients close on their homes, we need to encourage them to update their drivers license as soon as possible. One of my recent clients is a Texas State Trooper and he brought to light an important reason to update your license quickly if your information changes. I reminded him to bring his license to the title company for closing and he laughed because he said he doesn't go anywhere without his license, even if he isn't driving. The biggest reason to update your address is if you happen to be in an accident, the police need to know who you are in case you are seriously injured and can't talk or you have been killed. The police use the address on your license to contact relatives and if your address is wrong then they can't contact your family. The police then have to wait until relatives call the police and that could be hours later. Those few hours could be the different between saying "Goodbye" to a family member in the hospital and not seeing them again. I know people don't like to think about these things but my client said this scenario happens more than you would like to think. Don't let your family and friend worry needlessly.

People give several reasons for not updating their license from not wanting to change their picture or wasting time standing in line at the DMV but don't worry, you can go online now in Texas. You are allowed to update your address online if you meet the following criteria below:

  • Your license or identification card is not expired. If your license or ID expires with in one year as of today's date you may be eligible to renew.
  • You do not currently hold a provisional driver license. (All drivers 18 years of age or younger must renew in person.).
  • You currently hold a Class C or CM license. (Address changes for all Class A or B licenses and Commercial Driver Licenses must be obtained in person).
  • You have no change in your vision, physical or mental condition that would affect your ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Your record indicates that you are eligible to change your address online. (No current suspension/revocations).
