Gas Stations, Service Stations, Car Care Stations by Ceil Winters

This was posted this morning in an article I received from the Key West Citizen Newspaper in Key West Florida. That is where I was born and my dad owned the first Standard Oil station in Key West. Back then not everyone was fortunate enough to own a car. This is when our family purchased our first family car that was a Kaiser (I believe was a Mercury Brand).

I remember we as a family all worked at the service station. (My job was to carry my box out to the car at the pump, step up and clean the windows). My dad usually pumped the gas. That is back when someone would come out, pump your gas, clean your windows, check your tires and oil; have a soda and gossip for awhile. If you didn't have money to pay my mom would keep a record of money owed in a little hand-written log book. Back then we didn't have credit cards. I don't remember a cash register, I think dad had a cigar box to keep the money in and a pickle jar to put change. My brother use to work in the back and helped change tires. I guess my sister just sat and looked pretty, don't remember her having any chores.

Just a few memories as life was back then. Now we pump our own gas, check our own tires, clean our own windows and pay at the pump or go inside, pay and pick up a snack. We are lucky if we see the same person next trip to the"Convenience Store" as we call it today.

This has not one thing to do with real estate, septic inspections, home inspections, swimming pool inspections, commercial inspections, condo inspections but it sure was fun remembering.

Isn't it interesting how families tended to "work the business"? My family worked at Missouri Pacific Railroad -- dispatcher, receptionist, brakeman, road foreman -- during the day, and at night they all worked at the local drivein -- projectionist, lot attendant, counter clerk. Now it seems like mom and dad just fight, while the kids play video games or text their friends.

Carl,

Great story.  My uncle ran a Gulf station in Port Arthur.  I pumped many a gallon at about 30 cents per gallon.

Hi Dale, Russel and Richard

Thank you for stopping ny. It sure is fun to stop and think about, and rmember about days gone by.

Ahh...the good ol days. We had two "Service" stations here that would let us teenagers work on our "Rods" using their bays and lifts. They would charge a couple of dollars.

Hi Trey

Thank you for stopping by. Its fun to take a few minutes to think, and remember about days gone by.

Hi C&C -- Probably a lot of young people nowadays don't realize that we used to pull up to the pump and get all of our car needs taken care of... cleaning the windshield, checking under the hood, checking the tires... (except for paying for gas, of course.)  Those were the good old days!

Shirley - Young folks today have no idea. It was just a way of life for everyone back then, the whole family worked together and never thought any different. We didn't have time to do much else because we had chores even when we got home, homework, bath, supper and in bed by nine. Oh my, that would be considered abuse today.

Howdy there Carl and Ceil

Ceil - you sure are right! kids today sure would be sayen, it not just ain't fare I got to go to bed at 9:00 P.M., my friends don't have to. lol

I do believe if that way of life was still being fallowed today, our Country would be in a lot better shape.

God Bless America!
