Congratulations to Mercer Arboretum! They are celebrating 35 years of sharing their horticultural goodness with the community.

Wednesday, October 14 at !0:30 AM begins the official celebration day for the public. There will be tours throughout the day. Things to see include a shade bog, fern gardens and tiers of perennials. Also not to be missed is the lily pond that features an island accessbile by a bridge. There are picnic and playground areas too.

History for Mercer Arboretum in a nutshell. Thelma & Charles Mercer cleared their 14.5 acre tract so Thelma could enjoy her avid interest in horticulture. In 1974, when it became time to retire, the Mercers convinced Harris County to buy their tract & maintain it for the public's enjoyment. A non-profit got involved after the sale to encourage the Mercers' vision. Thanks to the Mercer Society for their pivotal role. Harris County Precinct 4 also did their part, purchasing adjacent acreage and allocating funds. Total acreage for Mercer Arboretum is currently just over 300 acres.
