Unclaimed Property in Texas

After discovering some "lost" assets, I've been on a mission to find all the places we leave valuable stuff and forget about it. An old 401(k) from a past job, a savings bond from graduation, a checking account from college - it really adds up.

So here's what's really interesting - I had everyone in my office consult the official unclaimed property website for Texas. I had always thought the site was just for lost state assets, but my assumption was incorrect. In minutes we found the following forgotten assets:

  • $209.22 from a bank account left behind after moving cities
  • $310.50 from dividends & interest from a universal insurance policy
  • $1,100 from an old 401(k)
  • $1,400 in an old saving accounts
  • $2,571.56 in accounts -- forgotten for years

So I want to start a movement... how many more "lost" assets can we find? The site I used was

http://www.window.state.tx.us/up/

but there are sites like this for every state. Then ask your friends and office colleagues to do the same. And here is my challenge - can you beat the $5,591.28 we found?
