I've been telling people this area is "Paradise" for a long time now. 
Earlier this week the New York Times named the Texas Hill Country as the No. 1 summer destination in the United States.
"The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic," the article said. "The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France."
With gas prices soaring, many Texans are discovering the beautiful Texas Hill Country. With about a tank a gas you can travel to the area and enjoy a family vacation at any of the summer camps, B&B's or resort style lodging along the rivers and creeks. Take a refreshing dip in the cool, clear water fed by numerous springs. Enjoy the lush green hillsides and view wildlife 
as you drive the scenic highways. 
Cypress trees line the banks of every river and provide towering canapies of shade. Live oaks dot the landscape and the ashe juniper create a dark green background for the hills.
The Hill Country is famous for birding. Many different kinds of birds make their home in the Texas Hill Country but many others migrate here every year. Recently a pair of green parrots have made a home in the palm trees 
in front of Acapulco Mexican Restaurant on Sidney Baker. They are not native to here but not far away either. We have enjoyed having them visit during "their summer vacation".
Kerrville offers museums, live theatres, great restaurants, RV parks, tubing, kayaking, swimming and much more. Medina, is the apple capital of Texas and you must stop and have some apple ice cream at the Apple Store (only 16 miles away from Kerrville). Bandera has a great "Cowboy" atmosphere, shopping, dining, dancing (only 22 miles from Kerrville). Want a German style dinner or great shopping visit Fredericksburg (only 23 miles from Kerrville). Want to tube a cold spring fed river, go to Leakey (only an hour away)or enjoy the Guadalupe River right here in Kerrville. Shop Mexico (1 1/2 hours away).
Remember the Alamo, 
Fiesta Texas (Six Flags) and Sea World 
in San Antonio ( only an hour away). You can't find a better vacation destination than this. The beautiful Texas Hill Country has it all!

Richard, Hawaii is wonderful but so is the beautiful Texas Hill Country and it's closer for most folks.
Lynn, Just a short drive from the Dallas area but seems like a world away. I lived in the Metroplex most of my life and Dallas has a lot to offer but totally different from the Hill Country. Have a great weekend.

The Texas Hill Country comprises some of the most beautiful places in the United States... and many people outside of Texas have never even heard of it. Be careful, with a mention in the New York Times it could become a tourist mecca!

This post doesn't help my case with my husband on not moving to Austin...
Donna, Austin is definitely very fine! Dallas, too has its very fine points. The two are completely different. Lifestyles and attitudes are totally opposite. My son lived in Dallas years ago and he loved it but it was not for me. If you like it there, you might not like Austin. It is great but very different from Dallas. As different as Ft. Worth and Dallas, you know what I mean?
Ricki, YIKES! If they are different like Dallas and Ft. Worth, we're going to have a problem!! I could never live in Ft. Worth. The pace over there is so S-L-O-W... more to think about.
You've got a big decision ahead of you. I'm sure you will make the right one. Kiss your little girl for me. She is so cute.

Hi Sondra, Lots of parrots live just a little way south of here in the more tropical areas of the Texas Valley and in Mexico. The Hill Country is not all cowboys that's just in Bandera. Kerrville is more about art and culture and Fredericksburg well that's historical preservation, German beer and Texas wine, shopping and of course Peaches! Come down some time and discover "Paradise". :)

Oh wow....I honestly didn't know that about the parrots. I've always associated the Hill Country with Bandera - which I do like. I look forward to learning more about the Hill Country.
Sondra, The Hill Country has so much to offer. Cowboys in Bandera is just one little town. All the towns are different and have wonderful things to offer. I Loved our time in Bulverde. The schools are great there which was important to me.
All the Hill Country is wonderful. I'm sure you are enjoying Galveston as well. It's lovely there and I love the coast. Bulverde just keeps growing!
