I spent 20+ years in the corporate world before getting into real estate and during that time I moved 13 times, crossing cities, states and even a four year stint overseas. As the mother of four kids I know what kind of stress you are under to make sure the move goes smoothly for everyone in the family.
Whenever a move was on the horizon one of the first things I looked at were the schools. So for those of you considering a possible move to the Kyle and Buda area, I thought I'd pull together the last few years Hays Independent School District Ratings for you.
The chart below contains the last three year's TAAS ratings (TAAS is the State of Texas School Rating System). I would not suggest that you only use the ratings as your determination of which school is best for your child, but it is a starting point. (More about my opinion on that below.)

As I mentioned above I wouldn't use the school ratings as the only determination as to where you may or may not want to live. I would suggest that you also talk to the school administration, perhaps to the president of the PTA, or other parents before deciding if a school is or is not right for your child.
As it happens, my youngest two daughters go to Hays High School and have been in the Hays CISD for the last six years. I have to say I have been very happy with the district overall. I have found their college prep program to be a very challenging program. I don't have any doubt that my daughter who is entering her senior year at Hays this fall, is really going to be prepared for college. She plans to attend UT next year. While my youngest, who is entering her Sophomore year, has definitely been enjoying the Social aspects of High School.
The students of Hays are largely from the cities of Kyle and Buda which are relatively small towns. This small town feel is reflected in the school. I guess you'd say as a whole the students aren't as sophisticated perhaps as you might find in say the Eanes district, nor is there as much money as some of the other districts. But I guess that's okay with me. After living in the Dallas area when my oldest was going to High School, I saw a lot of peer pressure when it came to money. I like the diversity and blend of students in Hays and I'm totally okay with the fact that you'll see more trucks in the parking lots than BMWs or Mercedes.
It's not that the kids aren't fashion conscious and up on everything other teens are interested in, I'm just not seeing the same amount of pressure from my two youngest daughters that I saw with my older two to buy them the next best thing, or the $100 designer jeans.
They are happy and seem well adjusted. All that being said you have to look at all of your options when you are considering a move. To help you with that, here are the links to three charts I created with the cross-district comparisons of schools in and around the Austin area.
High School Rating Comparisons
Middle School Rating Comparisons
Elementary School Rating Comparisons
