I must say there are numerous reasons I am a proud Houstonian, and especially a Texan! Friendly people, great warm weather, and the daily "y'alls" I hear! One particular subject though has made me even prouder...breast cancer research or any cancer research for that matter. Having had cancer myself, watched my mother go through it, I understand the need to support research and early detection. I have personally walked the Susan G. Komen for the cure walk. I walked it with 3 of my other friends and although we trailed in last, the point is we did it to support all the women who have lost their lives to breast cancer or the women who knew a loved one that lost the battle.
In Houston, Realtors are honored to receive a monthly "Houston Realtor" magazine that has vital information, stats, stories, etc. about our real estate market. I was particularly moved by a specific article about breast cancer. Although my mother didn't suffer from specifically breast cancer, she did however suffer from lymphoma cancer. I watched her suffer greatly with chemo, radiation, weight loss, hair loss, etc. It is heart breaking to see somebody you love so much suffer. I am very thankful to God and proud to say she is a survivor though and I am proud to be her daughter. I watched her poor body go through so much, it simply devastated me.
Anyways, this article I read was centered around a Houstonian, Nancy Owens, who battled breast cancer herself and who was also active in the real estate community. After reading it, I thought I would have to write about it so more people can be encouraged to support and donate to breast cancer research. Just so you know, I did not copy and paste anything, I just greatly shortened it with my own words (it was a long article) while mentioning the details and facts in case anybody else wants to donate.
Most people probably know that October respresents the month of breast cancer survivors, lost loved ones, and support and research. It is the PINK month! Well this recent October 21, 2008, the Seventh Annual Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation was held. Nancy Owens was a Houstonian and a loved and respected person who was also a Realtor very active in real estate. She lost her 20 year battle in September 2001 but her dream lives on because of the continued research in hoping to find a cure for breast cancer. The Houston Association of Realtors was a part of the support in the research. The Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation is also a part of a campaign called Moving to Cure Breast Cancer which encourages Houston Realtors to raise awareness and funds for further breast cancer research by the process of Realtor referrals to C&M Moving and Storage. C&M will then donate 5% of the completed move to the Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation in the name of the Realtor who made the referral. Anybody who wants more information can go to www.movingtocurebreastcancer.com. For donations go to www.NancyOwens.org. You can also read her amazing story there. Let's support!
